Here, we dive into every Star Wars movie, television show, and upcoming Disney+ project you need to be aware of as a Star Wars fan in this exciting new era of the franchise.

Timeline For the Star Wars Universe on Disney Plus

The Star Wars universe on Disney+ follows the BBY (After the Battle of Yavin) and ABY (After the Battle of Yavin) structure that has long been used within the Star Wars galaxy. Although Lucasfilm has quietly tried to shift away from the ABY and BBY model, this is still the most common way to date events in the Star Wars universe.

For example, George Lucas’s original Star Wars film, now known as Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977), takes place in 0 ABY, when the Battle of Yavin occurred.

The current Star Wars timeline [above], which was introduced in Justina Ireland’s Star Wars The High Republic novel, “A Test of Courage”, has six official eras, each of which includes various Star Wars movies and series.

These eras are The High Republic, Fall of the Jedi (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, The Clone Wars, Revenge of the Sith), Reign of the Empire (The Bad Batch, Solo: A Star Wars Story), Age of Rebellion (Rebels, Rogue: A Star Wars Story, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi), The New Republic (The Mandalorian), and Rise of the First Order (Resistance, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, The Rise of Skywalker)

It is worth noting that, as the franchise expands and new works, such as Patty Jenkins’s Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (2023) and Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film, are released, they will likely be added to this timeline.

Upcoming Star Wars Shows on Disney Plus

At the 2020 Disney Investor Day event, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy confirmed nearly a dozen upcoming streaming Star Wars shows. Although one series, Mandalorian spinoff Rangers of the New Republic, is “no longer in active development”, all other projects appear to be moving forward at this time.

Below, you can find Lucasfilm’s official confirmation of each project.

The Book of Boba Fett (December 2021)

As if the season finale of The Mandalorian Season 2 wasn’t exciting enough, the post-credits scene confirmed yet another new Star Wars series coming in December 2021.

The Book of Boba Fett is set to be the fourth show in The Mandalorian universe and will feature bounty hunter Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen), who just took Jabba the Hutt’s former throne — from none other than Bib Fortuna — on Tatooine.

Star Wars confirmed details about the show on their official Twitter account:

The Book of Boba Fett, a new Original Series, starring Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen and executive produced by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni and Robert Rodriguez, set within the timeline of The Mandalorian, is coming to @DisneyPlus Dec. 2021.

Ahsoka (2022)

The Mandalorian has become the cornerstone of Disney+, with Grogu and Din Djarin’s (Pedro Pascal) adventures through the galaxy anchoring the streaming platform’s original content lineup.

Now, fans of the hit Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni series have more to look forward to. Favreau and Filoni are currently developing Ahsoka, which is expected to introduce Star Wars Rebels villain Grand Admiral Thrawn into the live-action Star Wars story.

Andor (2022)

The highly anticipated Star Wars: Rogue One Cassian Andor prequel series starring Diego Luna will debut in 2022. It began shooting in London two weeks ago. The following official synopsis was previously released:

“…[it will follow the adventures of Rebel spy Cassian Andor during the formative years of the Rebellion and prior to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story…The rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)

The highly anticipated Deborah Chow-directed Obi-Wan Kenobi special event series is currently filming with Ewan McGregor (Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Hayden Christensen (Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker) reprising their prequel trilogy roles.

Kennedy has promised fans “the rematch of the century” in the series, which will be set on Tatooine during Kenobi’s self-imposed exile about a decade after Revenge of the Sith.

Visions (2021)

Kennedy announced that a brand new Star Wars short film project will be coming to Disney+ next year. Little is known about the series so far, but the official Tweet reads:

Star Wars: Visions, an Original Series of animated short films, celebrates the @StarWars galaxy through the lens of the world’s best Japanese anime creators. Coming in 2021 to @DisneyPlus.

Lando (release year unknown)

Cloud City’s Lando Calrissian — made famous by Billy Dee Williams and played by Donald Glover in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) — will be getting his own special event series exclusively for Disney+.

Per Star Wars’ official Tweet:

The galaxy’s favorite scoundrel, Lando Calrissian, will return in Lando, a brand-new event series for @DisneyPlus. Justin Simien (@JSim07) is in the early stages of developing the project.

A Droid Story (release year unknown)

If you love C-3PO and R2-D2 — and, really, who doesn’t? — you’re in for a special treat. Per the official Star Wars Twitter account:

Lucasfilm Animation is teaming up with Lucasfilm’s visual effects team, Industrial Light & Magic, to develop a special @StarWars adventure film for @DisneyPlus, A Droid Story. This epic journey will introduce us to a new hero guided by R2-D2 and C-3PO.

There’s no confirmation as to whether the new character is a droid or not (if it is, we hope it’s as cute as BB-8!)

The Acolyte (release year unknown)

We already knew that Leslye Headland’s (Russian Doll) highly-anticipated female-centric Star Wars series would focus on a largely “unexplored” era in the Star Wars timeline. Now, we have confirmation that it will take place at the end of The High Republic era, and could potentially feature the rise of Darth Plagueis — Sheev Palpatine’s mentor and murder victim.

The High Republic multimedia initiative is set to include this live-action Disney+ series, a publishing project, and, perhaps, the rumored animated series as well.

The official Tweet about The Acolyte Star Wars show reads:

Stay tuned to Inside the Magic for all of the latest Star Wars on Disney+ news.
