If you’re a fan of Star Wars history, you probably already know that Darth Sidious (AKA Emperor Sheev Palpatine) learned the ways of the Sith from Darth Plagueis — before murdering him.
Darth Plagueis has primarily appeared in Star Wars Legends non-canon materials, but he was mentioned by Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) during a conversation with Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) in the Skywalker Saga prequel trilogy’s final film, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005).
As he attempted to sway Skywalker — who eventually, of course, becomes Darth Vader — to the dark side, Palpatine said,
“Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise? Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith so powerful and so wise, he could use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create life. He had such a knowledge of the dark side, he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying.”
Now, with the recent Walt Disney Company Investor Day announcement that Lucasfilm is developing approximately 11 new Star Wars series for the Disney+ streaming service, some fans have begun to wonder if we could see the rise of Darth Plagueis onscreen for the first time — and even, perhaps, understand if his ability to create life could play into the experiments of Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) and Dr. Pershing (Omid Abtahi) in The Mandalorian and even, perhaps, the existence of Supreme Leader Snoke in the sequel trilogy.

Fans on Twitter are excited about the possibility of Darth Plagueis finally being the focus of a Star Wars series.

I’m most excited for this [referring to The Acolyte]. Sounds like it will be told from the prospective of the Sith. Could we see Darth Plagueis and Darth Tenebrous? How do they stay hidden from the Jedi. If a Jedi does findout about them do they simply kill them or do a force mind wipe or something?

They said #TheAcolyte takes place near the end of the #HighRepublic Era. Is it a show from the Sith’s perspective as they try to rise again? Maybe The Acolyte is the master of Darth Plagueis?

These are intriguing theories. Of course, we will have to wait until The Acolyte debuts on Disney+ to find out for sure what the storyline is, but it certainly seems likely that Darth Plagueis will make an appearance — all of which could be setting-up an eventual look at the relationship between a young Palpatine and his master in another show or mini-series.
For any Star Wars fan unfamiliar with the Sith Lord character Darth Plagueis, Wookieepedia offers these details about his rise to power during a largely unexplored era of the Star Wars timeline:
As master and disciple, Plagueis and Palpatine—who took the Sith moniker Darth Sidious—worked together for years, trying to unlock the secrets of immortality as Plagueis lusted for it and to execute their order’s long-percolating plan of supplanting the Galactic Republic with a new Sith Empire. At some point, Plagueis acquired the protocol droid 11-4D.
