Harrison Ford Reportedly Done Filming Han Solo's 'Star Wars' Return

Recently, online rumors started flying that 79-year-old Harrison Ford (Air Force One, What Lies Beneath, American Graffiti) would be making a surprising return to the Star Wars franchise, despite his known distaste for a galaxy far, far away — and, more specifically, as fans will recall, Force ghosts.

Ford — who made a name for himself as Millennium Falcon pilot Han Solo alongside Mark Hamill (Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker) and Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia Organa) in George Lucas’s original trilogy — last appeared in the Star Wars universe in the first sequel trilogy installment, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015).

He also briefly made a cameo in the Skywalker Saga finale, Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019). Ford appeared to Han and Leia’s son, Ben Solo (Adam Driver), as he eschewed the ways of Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) and left his Kylo Ren persona behind.

Now, Ford has reportedly finished filming Han Solo’s return in The Book of Boba Fett — the first Mandalorian spinoff series from the minds of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. According to one article about Ford’s potential Star Wars comeback, the A-List actor “is rumoured [sic: rumored] to have spent three days filming in London for a cameo scene in the final episode of The Book of Boba Fett.”

Although Ford’s iconic character was killed in at the hands of his son in The Force Awakens, the “next chapter” of The Mandalorian saga is set during the original trilogy era, approximately five years after Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983), so de-aging technology — similar to what was used for Hamill’s return as Skywalker in The Mandalorian Season 2 finale episode — is reportedly being used to bring him back.

The reports of Ford’s return as Solo are bolstered by the fact that The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm hired social media sensation Shamook, best known for a viral deepfake video that “cast” Marvel Cinematic Universe star Sebastian Stan as Luke Skywalker.

In July 2021, the digital artist confirmed their hiring in a comment on their YouTube channel, writing:

“As some of you may already know, I joined ILM [Industrial Light and Magic]/Lucasfilms a few months ago and haven’t had the time to work on any new YouTube content. Now I’ve settled into my job, uploads should start increasing again. They’ll still be slow, but hopefully not months apart. Enjoy!”

The fact that Solo obviously has history with Fett — if you’ll recall the infamous Sarlacc pit scene in Return of the Jedi — means that it is likely he could play a role, no matter how small, in the Tatooine-based Book of Boba Fett.

Prior to his new standalone series, Star Wars fans last saw Fett when made his triumphant return — alongside mercenary Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) — in The Mandalorian Season 2, Episode 6 (“Chapter 14: The Tragedy”).

He then played a key role in the finale episode when he deposited Shand, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), Cara Dune (Gina Carano) Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), and Nite Owl warrior Koska Reeves (Sasha Banks) on Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito)’s Imperial ship to rescue Grogu (AKA “Baby Yoda”).

As for Ford, the 79-year-old actor is currently filming the as-yet-untitled Indiana Jones 5.
