The Hollywood Reporter shared the following statement regarding the developing situation:

Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” a Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement. “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

On Wednesday, Carano was trending on social media after The Mandalorian [star] shared a post inferring that being a Republican today is like being Jewish during the Holocaust.

Furthermore, Deadline reported that Carano and her “agency UTA part ways in the wake of social media controversy.” While this is not wholly surprising, it does indicate that Carano may struggle to find work in acting, at least for the foreseeable future.

Throughout The Mandalorian Season 2, Carano trended off-and-on on social media due to her political opinions, garnering both support and backlash from Star Wars fans. For several months, opposing hashtags regarding Carano and her Mandalorian character — #FireGinaCarano, #WeLoveCaraDune, and #IStandWithGinaCarano — have trended on Twitter.

Interestingly, some of the most vital support for Gina Carano has come from her fellow Mandalorian actors and actresses. Some co-stars, including Katee Sackhoff (Bo-Katan Kryze), Carl Weathers (Greef Karga), Ming-Na Wen (Fennec Shand), and Mandalorian leading man Pedro Pascal (bounty hunter Din Djarin), have supported the actress throughout her time in the Star Wars franchise.

To date, Lucasfilm and the Walt Disney Company have remained silent regarding the Carano situation — until today. The former Muay Thai and women’s MMA fighter’s latest post was finally the straw that broke the camel’s back.

What was Carano’s role in Star Wars moving forward?

Gina Carano’s Cara Dune was expected to star in the upcoming Mandalorian spinoff series The Rangers of the New RepublicFew details regarding this series are known, but it could potentially now involve a surprise fan-favorite character, X-wing pilot Carson Teva (Paul Hyung-Sun Lee). It has not been confirmed, but Lee — a massive Star Wars fan — has expressed interest in continuing his involvement with the franchise.

THR editor Aaron Couch shared the following regarding Carano’s Star Wars career:

According to sources, Lucasfilm planned to unveil Gina Carano as the star of her own show during December’s investors day. They scrubbed those plans after erratic tweets in November

Carano could also have appeared in The Mandalorian Season 3 since the storyline for the third season has not been confirmed, although it is likely to involve the Darksaber.

Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau specifically created the character of Carasynthia (Cara) Dune for Carano, so the fact that she will not be involved moving forward is certainly intriguing.

At this time, Lucasfilm has not released a statement regarding who will replace her character in the upcoming show or if they will go in an entirely new direction.

Another female fighter, WWE star Sasha Banks appeared in the second season of The Mandalorian as Nite Owl Koska Reeves. So, Disney and Lucasfilm casting executives could look for someone from the UFC or MMA world to fill Carano’s shoes, or they may continue with a new story arc.

What else is happening in The Mandalorian franchise?

In addition to Rangers of the New Republic, The Mandalorian is set to receive two other spinoff series soon.

Ahsoka will feature Rosario Dawson reprising her role as fan-favorite Ahsoka Tano. Tano is expected to search the galaxy for fellow Jedi Ezra Bridger and Star Wars Rebels villain Grand Admiral Thrawn.
