Mark Hamill Writes to ‘Mandalorian’ Director, Fans Have Poignant Reactions

in Star Wars

When Star Wars fans tuned in to watch the final episode of The Mandalorian Season 2 (“Chapter 16: The Rescue”), they knew they should expect big things — after all, the last few episodes had already been teased as nothing short of a “roller coaster ride” — but, none of us knew exactly what we were in for.

Just when all hope seemed lost for Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), Grogu (AKA The Child AKA Baby Yoda), Cara Dune (Gina Carano), Bo-Katan Kryzee (Katee Sackhoff), and Nite Owl Koska Reeves (Mercedes Varnado/Sasha Banks), the cameo to end all Star Wars cameos took place.

Luke Skywalker — a CGI de-aged version of original actor Mark Hamill during the Star Wars: Episode VI – The Return of the Jedi (1983) era, no less — swooped in to save the day and spirit Grogu away to complete his Jedi training.

The only way it could have been better is if Princess Leia (the late Carrie Fisher) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) had somehow appeared, too. We did, however, get an R2-D2 cameo.

Now, Hamill has taken to Twitter to respond to a message from Mandalorian Season 2 finale director Peyton Reed. Yesterday, Reed wrote:

Dear @HamillHimself, When I was a kid, this photo hung on my bedroom wall. STAR WARS, and Luke Skywalker in particular, meant a great deal to me. Some things never change. It was an honor and a dream come true to work with you on @themandalorian. Thank you. #MTFBWY

Tonight, Hamill responded:

Dear @MrPeytonReed, I am so grateful to have been given the unexpected opportunity to revisit my character when he was still a symbol of hope & optimism. Your assured direction & kindness was a crucial element in the experience & means more to me than I can say. #ThankYOU

James Epstein shared many fans’ feelings, posting a GIF of Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) yelling “MORE!” from the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Although nothing has been confirmed, there are rumors that the iconic Jedi Knight — though perhaps not played by Hamill — will return to the Mandalorian saga sooner rather than later.

Social media user Jake Porter shared a touching response to Reed and Hamill’s online exchange:

That’s awesome. Very true, Mark. Luke came back to us when we needed him the most <3

Finally, one more reply summed up how most Star Wars fans felt — and continue to feel — about the Luke Skywalker Mandalorian reveal:

It was a fantastic surprise appreciated by all fans of the franchise!

Do you hope to see more Luke Skywalker tied to The Mandalorian saga, whether in the main series or a spinoff show?
