An Original Avenger Won't Rewatch One "Difficult" MCU Movie

Ever since Kevin Feige’s Marvel Cinematic Universe began with Iron Man (2008), the Avengers have been at the core of the MCU.

Recently, in fact, a number of original Avengers franchise stars — currently both dead and alive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — returned to voice their characters in the animated series, What If…?, which flipped the script on key moments in the MCU, imagining what would have happened if they had gone very differently.

Among the voice actors who lent their talents were Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/the Hulk), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Michael Douglas (Dr. Hank Pym), Michael B. Jordan (Erik “Killmonger” Stevens), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton/Hawkeye), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Stephen Strange), and late actor Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa/Black Panther).

Now, fresh off of Season 1 of his first standalone series, Hawkeye, original Avenger Jeremy Renner has shared details about which Marvel movie he’ll never rewatch — and it may not surprise you. Speaking to BBC Radio, the Hurt Locker alum said that the Infinity Saga conclusion, Avengers: Endgame (2019), is too “difficult” to ever revisit:

“I saw it at the premiere, but that was just something to celebrate for all of us. We were all laughing and weeping, and it was a lot to do. I’ll never watch that again; it was a difficult experience. We were all just a sobbing mess and we’re laughing. It’s amazing, we were like audience members and that was awesome to experience. I mean, that was a lovely, beautiful experience to share.”

Endgame was challenging for movie goers to watch as well, as it featured the deaths of fan-favorite characters like Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.) and Clint Barton’s best friend Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).

Natasha’s death, in particular, plays a role in Renner’s Hawkeye series. Her “sister” Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) attempts to get revenge on the archer for what she perceives as his part in Natasha’s demise.

All six episodes of Hawkeye are currently streaming on Disney+. There has not yet been official confirmation of whether or not the series will get a second season, but a spinoff called Echo has already been greenlit.
