By the time fans have watched both episodes of tomorrow’s Hawkeye premiere on the Disney+ streaming platform, there’s a good chance that Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit, Pitch Perfect 3) will be the hottest name in Kevin Feige’s Marvel Cinematic Universe.
During the recent global press conference for Hawkeye, Steinfeld expressed her excitement at being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and confirmed that her time as part of a “new group of young Avengers” is only starting:
“…this feels so crazy to me right now just sitting here with this group of people. I’m so grateful to be a part of this show and this universe, and, um, it’s only the beginning.”
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige himself also weighed in on the MCU newcomer, noting that Steinfeld didn’t even go through Marvel’s famously secretive audition process — Secret Invasion‘s Emilia Clarke has previously shared details about her “fake auditions” — in order to land her role:
“Hailee did not audition. We were very, very lucky that Hailee was open to this because we, uh, very much believed that she was sort of the prototype for the character, and as occasionally happens, you know, the dream version of the character, uh, agrees to do it. So, it was from the moment there were — I think there were some early meetings and discussions — but we were very thankful that she wanted to jump into this role because we had a feeling that she would be great, and she is.”
True to form for the MCU, the conversation eventually turned lighthearted, and Steinfeld was asked how it feels to be “next year’s best-selling Halloween costume”, to which the actress responded:
“Wow. Uh, uh, I don’t know about that. Um, I did notice though, this year a lot of Kate Bishop costumes, which was, I mean, the most surreal thing, right? This show isn’t even out. Of course, there are the comics, and like I mentioned before, this is a character that people have loved for a very long time, so it makes sense. But, to have that sort of come into my world and to be at all a part of that is incredibly surreal.”
You can catch Steinfeld alongside Renner, Vera Farmiga (Eleanor Bishop), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Alaqua Cox (Maya Lopez/Echo), and more when the Christmas-themed Hawkeye series debuts on November 24, 2021.
