The Marvel Cinematic Universe has made a splash on the small screen since the beginning of 2021 — first with the classic sitcom-inspired WandaVision, then with the intense The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and now with the weekly Multiverse craziness that is Loki. Now, with the Loki season finale episode set for next week, we finally know when Marvel’s next series — What If…? — will debut.
The Marvel Studios trailer [above] for the upcoming animated series confirms that it will debut on the Disney+ streaming service on August 11, 2021. The official description of Marvel’s What If…? reads:
What If…? flips the script on the MCU, reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways. Coming to Disney+ in Summer 2021, Marvel Studios’ first animated series focuses on different heroes from the MCU, featuring a voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their roles. The series is directed by Bryan Andrews; Ashley Bradley is head writer.
The series, which will imagine what could have happened had things in the MCU gone differently than they actually did, will see the return of numerous live-action MCU Avengers franchise stars, including Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/the Hulk), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Michael Douglas (Dr. Hank Pym), Michael B. Jordan (Erik “Killmonger” Stevens), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton/Hawkeye), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), and late actor Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa/Black Panther).
Other characters that will appear in the series include Tony Stark/Iron Man and Doctor Strange. Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) will portray the all-seeing Watcher, narrating the series.
At this time, it is unclear if any of the Loki variants — including Sylvie (Sophia di Martino), Kid Loki, Alligator Loki, President Loki, and Classic Loki –, who have been recently introduced into the Marvel Universe, will appear in What If…? in any capacity.
Earlier this year, Discussing Film spoke to What If…? writer, A.C. Bradley, who shared:
“Kevin [Marvel President Kevin Feige] said that we will be exploring every movie in a new way, but not every episode is about one movie if that makes sense. On the reel [shown at D23 Expo], there is this image of a Star-Lord T’Challa because we wanted to see what if the worlds of Black Panther and the Guardians of the Galaxy collided? That was taking two universes, two to three movies, kind of twisting them in new ways.”
Are you excited about the return of characters from all 23 MCU movies in What If…? Which MCU hero are you most looking forward to in the animated series?
