If there are two terms most Star Wars fans never expect to hear in the same sentence, they are “Luke Skywalker” and “Imperial soldier”, unless of course, that sentence happens to be “Luke Skywalker just took his lightsaber to an Imperial soldier”– or, in the case of The Mandalorian, a Dark Trooper droid.

Now, though, at least in the LEGO Star Wars franchise, Jedi Knight Skywalker is about to turn into a soldier for Emperor Palpatine and the Galactic Empire.

In a new trailer for the upcoming LEGO Star Wars: Terrifying Tales — streaming on Disney+ on October 1, 2021 — we get our first glimpse of young Skywalker in Imperial armor, and it’s unsettling, to say the least.

StarWars.com provided a brief synopsis of the “Terrifying Tale”, which will showcase what would have happened if Skywalker had joined the ranks of his father, Darth Vader, and turned to the dark side of the Force instead of heeding Obi-Wan ‘Old Ben’ Kenobi’s (Alec Guinness) teachings and ultimately going to Dagobah to train with Grand Master Yoda (Frank Oz) as he did in George Lucas’s original trilogy:

In a riff on the classic “The Monkey’s Paw,” a magical Wookiee limb gives Luke a handful of wishes, turning him into a soldier of the Empire.

While this isn’t Star Wars canon — and is somewhat in keeping with the stories in Dark Horse Comics’ Star Wars Infinities series, which reimagines classic moments in the Star Wars story — it will certainly be interesting to see Skywalker as an Imperial pilot, even if it is just for fun.

What’s next for Luke Skywalker in Star Wars?

When we last saw iconic Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker (CGI Mark Hamill) in the Star Wars franchise, it was during his surprise return in Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni’s The Mandalorian Season 2 finale episode (“Chapter 16: The Rescue”).

After saving Grogu, bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), Cara Dune (Gina Carano)Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen)Koska Reeves (Sasha Banks), and Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) from Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) and his deadly Dark Troopers, Skywalker shocked Star Wars fans by also departing the Imperial cruiser with Grogu in tow to complete his Jedi Order training.

While we don’t yet know precisely where the duo will show up again — or if they will be accompanied by Mara Jade, potentially played by Marvel Cinematic Universe star Brie Larson — there are several options.

“Baby Yoda” and his new Jedi Master could, of course, reappear in The Mandalorian Season 3 or Ahsoka in 2022.

They could also show up in The Book of Boba Fett this December — the next Star Wars live-action series is set to serve as The Mandalorian Season 2.5″ according to creator Jon Favreau.

Finally, Skywalker and Grogu could make their way back into the Star Wars galaxy in the unconfirmed Luke Skywalker series that is reportedly in development with another MCU star, Sebastian Stan, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Mark Hamill during the original trilogy years.

Wherever the duo makes their next appearance, their story is certainly far from over.
