When Marvel fans think of Thor, they think of his hammer, Mjolnir. As connected to the character as Cap’s shield is to Captain America, Mjolnir plays a key role in the God of Thunder’s storyline both in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Marvel comics.

Now, at least in the comic universe, Thor and his hammer have been separated, as Mjolnir has gone missing. To provide some background, comic book Thor has taken up the mantle of King of Asgard — he has also noticed some strange occurrences with his hammer. It has been, for example, unusually heavy for him and easily carried by those — namely Tony Stark/Iron Man — who should not be worthy to wield it.

One recent article explains how these issues led Mjolnir to go MIA:

Thor assumes his hammer problems have to do with his new station. He chooses to leave the hammer in the safest place he can imagine: Avengers Mountain, the current home base of Earth’s mightiest heroes. Setting the hammer aside, Thor hopes, will allow him to focus on being a better ruler and less of a warrior. But he may have miscalculated.

Thor #17 sees Thor summoned to Vanaheim to reunite with his mother Freyja, father Odin, and sister Angela. The adventure starts as a family hunt, with Freyja rechristening herself the God of the Hunt. But Angela is the one that summoned them all there because Thor’s reign on Asgard hasn’t been going smoothly. She makes it clear that Thor needs to get his act together, or she will come and claim the throne of Asgard, which is rightfully hers as the eldest of Odin’s children.

Ultimately, Captain America contacts Thor to tell him his hammer is no longer where he put it for safekeeping. At this time, that’s all we know until Thor #18 releases, so stay tuned.

What’s next for Thor in the MCU?
