Recently, The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm confirmed that a behind-the-scenes look at Luke Skywalker’s epic return to the Star Wars universe would be shared in an upcoming Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian special on Disney+.
What was, perhaps, most shocking to Star Wars fans about the Jedi Knight’s reappearance was the fact that he hadn’t been recast — there was no Sebastian Stan in sight, in fact.
Hamill and key members of the Mandalorian team, like showrunner Jon Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni, kept the epic cameo a secret for over a year until The Mandalorian Season 2 finale episode (“Chapter 16: The Rescue”) aired.
Now, in a new clip from the upcoming Luke Skywalker special, Filoni has teased the “uplifting” future he sees for The Mandalorian saga and the Star Wars franchise as a whole.
“People think the job is great because we get to tell the story, we get to do these effects, because we get these experiences, because we go to Celebration, right, but, also great is just standing on the side and watching somebody.
You know, again, like I said, I saw that child inside Jon [Jon Favreau], that he experienced Star Wars. I see that with Peyton [Mandalorian Season 2 finale director Peyton Reed]. You see your crew just staring at Mark [Mark Hamill], and you realize they’re remembering what it meant to them.
And you realize you’ve been part of constructing something that’s giving that experience to people, this good feeling, which, fundamentally, Star Wars should deliver a good feeling, an uplifting feeling, in you and your family, your kids, whatever.”
Hamill also recently teased the show on his Instagram stories, posting a clip of him in Luke’s Jedi robe accompanied by the caption, “Hope you all have a very good feeling about this.”
Although there has been no official word on the Skywalker’s future in The Mandalorian universe, an official Lucasfilm poster for Comic Con @ Home [below] recently indicated that he will be back as Grogu’s Jedi Master — and that “Baby Yoda” will get his very own yellow lightsaber.
