After 376 days without a live-action series — The Mandalorian Season 2 ended with “Chapter 16: The Rescue” on December 18, 2020 — Star Wars is back with a vengeance. Literally. Legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) are ready to settle scores on Tatooine in The Book of Boba Fett, billed by creator Jon Favreau as “the next chapter” of The Mandalorian saga.

**MINOR SPOILERS FOR THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT SEASON 1, EPISODE 1 (“Chapter 1: Stranger In a Strange Land”) BELOW**

The series begins with Fett in a bacta tank, flashing back to key moments from his prior life, both on Kamino and during the original trilogy era. After 38 years, Star Wars fans are even graced with a canon explanation of how Fett escaped from the infamous Sarlacc pit from Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983).

Then, the present day portions of the series — which take place during The Mandalorian era about five years after Return of the Jedi — begin immediately after The Mandalorian Season 2 finale episode post credits scene, in which Fett and Shand stormed Jabba the Hutt’s palace, made quick work of Bib Fortuna (Michael Carter), and took control of Jabba’s throne, setting themselves up to control Tatooine’s criminal underworld.

Despite the fact that the debut episode of The Book of Boba Fett filled in four-decade-old Star Wars plot holes, some fans are disappointed with the runtime of “Chapter 1,” which clocked in at just about 39 minutes on the nose.

Bren wrote:

First book of Boba Fett episode is disappointingly short but pretty awesome. So excited for the rest of the season.

The 100% Star Wars Twitter account expressed a similar, but more vociferous, opinion, sharing:

These 35 minute long episodes are going to hurt Star Wars TV stories. It’s just not enough time.

The Mandalorian suffered badly because of the erratically short runtimes, even the Marvel shows have and I can already tell it’s going to be the same with Book of Boba Fett.

A user going by YokoLittnerFan94 agreed with the general consensus that the debut episode should have been longer:

Saw the first episode of “The Book of Boba Fett” and was awesome! My only complain [sic: complaint is] that it felt a bit short but oh well. Can’t wait for the next! #BobaFett

While the official runtimes for all seven episodes of the first season of The Book of Boba Fett have not been released, they are likely to vary widely if its predecessor, The Mandalorian, is any indication. Over the course of two seasons of the hit series, episode runtimes have spanned 25 minutes to 47 minutes.
