The Marvel Universe may have a light tone, but it’s still seen its fair share of death and destruction. Here’s a comprehensive list of all of the dead MCU characters, from films such as Iron Man and Spider-Man: Far From Home!

It’s important to note that a good chunk of these characters (especially the heroes) have actually been resurrected. However, even if they were snapped away by Thano’s and brought back from The Blip during Avengers: Endgame, it still counts.

Interestingly, Marvel tends to kill off its villains and have them stay dead. Only a handful of Marvel baddies are still confirmed as alive such as Zemo and Abomination, who will reportedly play major roles in an upcoming Disney+ series. Anyway, without further ado, let’s see who hasn’t been so lucky in the Marvel universe!

Lovable Groot is the first MCU hero to be given the honor of being killed off. This Guardian of the Galaxy dies nobly and peacefully protecting his fellow heroes. He later leaves behind a new Groot (AKA Baby Groot), who is also killed off. Groot can’t catch a break, apparently!

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s one and only MCU appearance (so far) has him die at the hands of AI meanie Ultron. He goes down saving a child and Clint Barton / Hawkeye. Nice guy.

The first of many, many Thanos victims, Idris Elba‘s Heimdall is murdered by the Mad Titan on the Asgardian colony ship. The death occurs when he, Loki, and Thor cannot stop Thanos from taking an infinity stone during the prologue to Avengers: Infinity War.

Gamora (Avengers: Infinity War)

Gamora has one of the saddest deaths in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She too dies at the hands of Thanos, but this time it’s personal. The purple villain throws her from a cliff on Vormir to obtain the soul stone. She is never revived, but in an alternate timeline, Gamora turns up in Avengers: Endgame and is presumably still running around the galaxy.

Vision (Round one) (Avengers: Infinity War)

Despite the valiant efforts of Captain America and co, the Avengers just run out of time. Infinity War ends with Vision bravely stopping Thanos from purging the universe when he allows Wanda Maximoff to destroy the mind stone.

Psyche! Vision joins the ranks of the dead MCU characters for the second time when the Mad Titan uses the time stone to undo his death … to kill him all over again! How he’s walking around and acting like a 1950s dandy in WandaVision has yet to be explained.

Bucky Barnes / The Winter Soldier (Avengers: Infinity War)

Thanos‘ snap claims many iconic characters and the first to go is Bucky Barnes. The former Winter Soldier fades into nothingness at the battle of Wakanda.

T’Challa / Black Panther (Avengers: Infinity War)

Another tragic death for another iconic Avenger. The first of the original Avengers to die is none other than Scarlett Johannson’s Natasha Romanoff. She sacrifices herself on Vormir to get the soul stone (in the same way as Gamora), leaving Hawkeye heartbroken.

Tony Stark / Iron Man (Avengers: Endgame)

Definitely the most iconic MCU character death on the list. Robert Downey Jr is in many ways the poster child of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His character, Tony Stark, sacrifices his life to save the entire universe as Doctor Strange foretold it. There’s been a Stark-shaped hole in the MCU since he left!

Another Extremis infused soldier. This angry chap is killed by a remote-controlled Iron Man suit on board air force one.

Aldrich Killian / The Mandarin (Iron Man 3)

“The Mandarin” was kind of a let down for hardcore Marvel comics fans, as he wasn’t exactly comic-accurate. Regardless, Guy Pierce’s character is killed by Pepper Potts using one of Tony’s suits. (Does Iron Man ever take down his own villains?!)

Kurse (Thor: The Dark World)

Credit: Marvel Studios

You might forget this meat-headed footsoldier from Thor: The Dark World. Kurse is a magically altered version of Algrim. He joins the long list of dead MCU characters when Loki stabs him and tricks him into entering a black hole.

Jasper Sitwell (Captain America: The Winter Soldier)

In an act of vengeance, Scarlet Witch rips out the baddie’s robotic heart. A surviving drone with his consciousness later has a conversation with his “brother” Vision, who finishes him off with the power of the mind stone.

Erik Killmonger (Black Panther)

Sadly, one of the best MCU villains only lasts one movie. He dies from injuries sustained in the final battle with T’Challa. However, he’s heavily rumored to reappear in Black Panther II.

Loki (Avengers: Infinity War)

Credit: Marvel Studios

Another fantastic Marvel villain joins the list of dead MCU characters, though really he’s an anti-hero at this point. He’s murdered by Thanos long before the snap when the Mad Titan breaks his neck. There’s “no resurrections this time”, though an alternate timeline Loki will appear in his own Disney+ series, so don’t bid Tom Hiddleston farewell just yet!

Ebony Maw (Avengers: Infinity War)
