There are some movie franchises you just don’t mess with. Chief among them, perhaps, is Star Wars. To longtime fans, George Lucas’s Star Wars original trilogy is sacred, including the cast of Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia Organa), Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), and Obi-Wan “Old Ben” Kenobi (Alec Guinness).

Sometimes, however, it’s fun to see even the most legendary cinematic masterpieces shaken up a bit.

Recent deepfake videos of Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) as an incredibly impressive Princess Leia and Marvel’s Sebastian Stan (Avengers, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as a young Luke Skywalkerwhich might actually happen in a rumored upcoming series — have had Star Wars fans intrigued to see more similar video manipulations.

Now, deepfake extraordinaire, YouTuber Shamook, has inserted Scottish actor Ewan McGregor into the original trilogy in place of Alec Guinness.

What is interesting about this particular deepfake is that McGregor has already played the Jedi Knight in the prequel trilogy and is set to reprise his role in Deborah Chow’s upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+. So, we already know the actor can play the part — but seeing McGregor in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977) is certainly trippy!

Now 50 years old, McGregor was only six when the first Star Wars movie released. Guinness, on the other hand, was 63 years of age when he first donned Kenobi’s Jedi robe. McGregor was 28 when Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999) was filmed, so the deepfake shows a younger version of Kenobi than Lucas actually cast.

In this particular Star Wars deepfake, fans get to see footage of McGregor on Tatooine with the likes of Hamill’s Skywalker, Kenny Baker’s R2-D2, and Anthony Daniels’s protocol droid C-3PO.

When Star Wars fans next see McGregor as the legendary Jedi Master, it will be back on Tatooine, approximately ten years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005).

Though the overall plot of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series is being kept under wraps, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that Hayden Christensen will be returning as Kenobi’s former Padawan, Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker. There have also been unconfirmed rumors that both Sith Lord Darth Maul (Ray Park) and Obi-Wan’s lover, Duchess Satine Kryze (potentially played by Denise Gough) will appear.

She also assured fans that the lightsaber duel “rematch of the century” is coming, so we can expect an epic lightsaber duel, presumably to rival Mustafar, at some point during the limited series.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will be streaming on Disney+ in 2022.
