Every turn we take, every trail we track…we can’t figure out when an opening date for the Moana attraction is coming back! Or at least, we aren’t sure when the opening date will be announced at all.
Back in 2019, Disney shared that an all-new attraction themed after the beloved story of Moana would be arriving at EPCOT. But as of late, we aren’t exactly sure what has become of those plans. Can we still expect to see a new Moana attraction at Walt Disney World Resort? And, if so, will it open this year? Here’s everything we know about the new Moana attraction at the second Disney Park in Florida, EPCOT.

What Is the New Moana Attraction coming to Disney World?
At D23 Expo 2019, Disney announced that an all-new Moana-themed attraction would be coming soon to the EPCOT theme park at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
As Disney officials have previously described, “The reinvention of EPCOT will include Journey of Water, Inspired by ‘Moana.’ This first-ever experience inspired by the Walt Disney Animation Studios’ hit film will let Guests interact with magical, living water in a beautiful and inspiring setting.
The company has also called the new attraction the “forthcoming Moana-inspired Journey of Water walkthrough maze” as part of the multi-year transformation of the EPCOT theme park.

The Walt Disney World official news website shares a press release with the following attraction description:
Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana will be the first Disney Parks experience inspired by the hit Walt Disney Animation Studios film. This lush exploration trail will invite guests to meet and play with magical, living water. Just like Moana’s friend the ocean, water will have a personality of its own, helping guests learn how to protect the natural water cycle in a fun and engaging way.
As a reminder, this new attraction is not a ride. It’s an interactive, walkthrough experience for Guests of all ages, but Guests won’t be boarding ride vehicles and heading to Motunui. Instead, they will get to walk through a maze with themes and elements inspired by the beloved Moana film from Walt Disney Animation Studios. And, like many parts of EPCOT, the attraction is educational, so Guests will learn all about nature and the water cycle.

When Will the New Moana Attraction Open at EPCOT?
Journey of Water is still included in several Disney press releases about upcoming projects. We can see in this D23 post here that the ride was announced at D23 Expo 2019, as we shared, and we can also see that it is included in this Disney Parks Blog article.
Perhaps most notably, the attraction still remains in a press release on the Disney World news website that has continually been updated to reflect the latest information. We have seen other projects that were announced at D23 Expo (namely the Mary Poppins attraction and the extensive Spaceship Earth refurbishment) removed from this same press release, so this seems like a good sign for the Moana attraction.

Given this — as well as USA Today‘s recent mention of the attraction — it would appear that Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana is still in the works at Walt Disney Imagineering. However, it is important to note that we do not know when it will open, and currently, a 2021 opening date seems unlikely.
Although a 2021 date was previously projected, we now know that the attraction is not in Disney’s confirmed plans for this year. Furthermore, Disney has stayed rather quiet on many EPCOT projects (aside from HarmonioUS, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, and the new fountain in front of Spaceship Earth).
For now, we are not sure when Journey of Water will open. We may get lucky and experience the attraction sooner rather than later, but until we receive more official information from The Walt Disney Company, nothing is for certain.

More Moana Coming to Disney World
If you are a Moana fan, you have more than the Journey of Water attraction to look forward to. Disney has also shared big plans to bring Moana themes to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort at Walt Disney World.
A Disney spokesperson previously stated that Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort would undergo some resort room renovations that will “include a move to a Pacific Ocean-inspired color palette as well as details, patterns and textures from Disney’s Moana, an animated film that takes place on the Polynesian island of Motunui.”

We also know that a pool refurbishment was announced amid the room rethemes.
Right now, we don’t yet know an official opening date for the Moana rooms at this Disney World hotel, but we know there are plenty of fans of the Disney film who can’t wait to stay in a themed room at a resort that is so close to Magic Kingdom.
So, if you’re someone who can’t wait to experience all things Moana at Disney World, you’re in luck. We just don’t know when all of these new offerings will officially open at the Most Magical Place on Earth.
