Deadpool 3 canceled

Disney and Marvel recently shocked their fans by announcing a radical shift in their planned release schedule in 2022 and 2023. This includes  Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessThor: Love and ThunderBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Indiana Jones 5. They have reshuffled much of the planned Marvel Phase Four release dates, and hidden in the announcement were two films that were removed from the schedule and those were previously rumored to be Deadpool 3 and Blade.

While Kevin Feige’s Marvel Studios has never officially announced release dates for Deadpool 3 starring Ryan Reynolds or Blade starring Mahershala Ali that fans were able to suss out that the unnamed films that were supposed to come on July 28, 2023, and October 6, 2023, most likely belonged to these Marvel Cinematic Universe films.

While Disney did not give a reason for the delays it is most likely a result of the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic. It could also be connected to the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) strike which did reach a tentative agreement with studios like Netflix, Warner Bros, and Disney. This has allowed production to continue for the time being but the contract is still subject to approval by union members. Due to the way that Marvel Cinematic Universe films build on one each other a delay in one Marvel movie has cascading effects.

Deadpool fans have been concerned about Wade Wilson’s Marvel Cinematic Universe debut ever since Disney bought 20th Century Fox and acquired the rights to the Merc with a Mouth. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige did promise that the film would maintain the R-rating but fans continued to worry. They have been paying close attention to all news surrounding Deadpool 3.

There have been rumors of tension between actor Ryan Reynolds who has played Deadpool since his live-action debut in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and had to fight tooth and nail for the character to get a solo movie Deadpool (2016). It became the highest-grossing R-rated film at the time and received a sequel, Deadpool 2 (2018) before the merger.

Ryan Reynolds recently announced he was taking a sabbatical from acting following the completion of his movie on Apple+, Spirited. At the time he did not specially address his work as Deadpool in the announcement despite the fact it was supposed to be in production.

Deadpool 3 has been slow in development. It does not have a director, though Bob’s Burgers’ Molyneux sisters, Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin, have been confirmed as writers. Actors like Josh Brolin (Cable) and Zazie Beetz (Domino) have not received word if they will return.

At the current rate, there is plenty of time for Ryan Reynolds to take a break from acting before filming begins. The question is now, will he return? There have been rumors of tension between actor Ryan Reynolds and Disney over plot points in the film.

What About Blade?

Blade was originally announced at 2019’s San Diego Comic-Con and seems to have been cursed ever since. Marvel’s India Twitter account recently accidently announced a release date for MCU’s take on Eric Brooks aka Blade. They placed it on October 7, 2022, which was a date that Marvel Studios did have on its schedule for a time. But the unnamed film was later moved to October 6, 2023, the date that was just removed from Marvel Studios’ release schedule.

Since it’s announcement two years ago, Marvel has not made progress on the Daywalker’s MCU debut. Blade is expected to begin filming sometime later this year but it has been pushed back twice already. The Marvel film will be directed by Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli). Stacy Osei-Kuffour, who worked on HBO’s Watchman, will write the script and Marvel did let fans know not to expect an R-rating.

Other than Mahershala Ali no other characters or casts have been officially confirmed by Marvel Studios. Though many fans are secretly hoping for a cameo by Oscar Isaac’s Marc Spector AKA Moon Knight to set up a Midnight Sons project.

One point worth noting is that the other untitled project that was originally slated for a Fall 2023 was rumored to be the Fantastic Four reboot and it was rescheduled to November 3, 2023 instead of being removed from the schedule.

While removing a film from the schedule does not confirm that it has been canceled, Marvel fans should not be holding out their breath to see Deadpool 3 or Blade anytime soon. They might not show up in Phase Four at all.

Let us know in the comments if you are concerned Deadpool 3 or Blade may never get released.
