Halloween is almost a week away, and that means most people already have their costumes all together. And if you are currently costumeless, don’t worry! There are plenty of classics to choose from, like witches and mummies, and previous Halloween icons from film and television, like Michael Myers or anyone from Harry Potter or Stranger Things (2016-present).

However, you may want to be something more current or prevalent in pop culture today. Or you might want to avoid the most popular options altogether. Either way, the analysts over at BonusInsider have calculated the most popular Halloween costumes for 2023 by averaging search results on Google and TikTok.

So, let’s look at the costumes you are likely to see all over the place when you go to your Halloween parties or trick-or-treating with the kids. These are the most popular Halloween costumes this year.

Men’s Halloween Costumes

Men have a ton of basic options when it comes to Halloween costumes. You can easily dress up as a vampire, Frankenstein’s monster, or draw a scar on your face and just say you’re a zombie. Their current pop culture options are fairly straightforward as well, with most of the top five wearing regular clothes and maybe a wig, some facial hair, or a dapper hat.

The five most popular male Halloween costumes for 2023 are:

  1.  Ken (Barbie) – 51.4%
  2.  J. Robert Oppenheimer (Oppenheimer) – 18.09%
  3.  Din Djarin (The Mandalorian) – 17.26%
  4.  Mario (Super Mario Bros.) – 7.48%
  5.   Donald Trump – 5.76%

Three of these costumes were expected, specifically Ken (Ryan Gosling) from Barbie (2023), J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) from Oppenheimer (2023), and Mario since they are the three highest-grossing movies of the year.

On top of that, Ken definitely got some help from couples who wanted to pair with Barbie (more on her later).

Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) from The Mandalorian (2019-present) is also understandable since the character has become one of the most popular Star Wars characters ever. That being said, making a high-quality version of that armor will take a ton of work.

The most unexpected entry by far is Donald Trump. Even though jokes about the former President feel stale, it seems that the internet isn’t quite done with bad impersonations, orange wigs, and too much makeup.

Women’s Halloween Costumes

There is a Halloween stereotype that the holiday is an excuse for women to dress up as “sexy” versions of things we see every day. However, according to this ranking, that has been debunked because these costumes definitely trend more toward the horrifying side of things.

The five most popular female Halloween costumes for 2023 are:

  1.  Barbie (Barbie) – 48.65%
  2.  Wednesday Addams (Wednesday) – 23.26%
  3.  Doja Cat Demon (Demons Music Video) – 11.08%
  4.  Ariel (The Little Mermaid) – 9.25%
  5.  M3GAN (M3GAN) – 7.76%

While Barbie and Ariel have been non-frightening standards for some time now, their popularity has resurfaced thanks to great movies with excellent performances from Margot Robbie and Halle Bailey. That being said, the other three bring much more spooky energy than anything else on this list.

Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) may not be scary, but her macabre attire and deadpan delivery are definitely creepy. And if you want to be creepy and blonde, don’t worry! M3GAN from Blumhouse Productions is here to make sure that you can be cute and murderous.

However, the most interesting entry is easily the demon from the music video for Doja Cat’s song “Demons.” A combination of a devil, cat, and reptile, this is probably the most difficult costume to pull off and the most satisfying. And if you haven’t seen the video, she is a genuinely terrifying entity.
