The film has been breaking box office records worldwide and now boasts the second-highest-grossing debut weekend of all time, next only to Marvel Studios’ Infinity Saga conclusion, Avengers: Endgame (2019).
In all, AMC recorded more than 7 million tickets sold locations globally, including more than five million tickets sold in the U.S. Attendance was off to a strong start Dec. 16, as moviegoers rushed screens to qualify for an exclusive “Spider-Man” NFT, the first ever of its kind from a major theatrical exhibitor. The movie also set a new single-day international attendance record on Dec. 18.
Now, however, a new poll indicates that despite the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, 2021 was really “the year of Shang-Chi” for Marvel fans.
…when asked which movies were “Best of the Year” material, more people [out of 2,000 respondents] cited “Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings” than any other film on the list.
In fact, four of the top 20 movies of the year featured superhero characters from the same cinematic universe — “Shang-Chi” and “Black Widow,” which were produced by Marvel Studios, and “Spider-Man” and “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” produced by Sony Pictures in association with Marvel.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings — which debuted exclusively in theaters on September 3, 2021 — has already been greenlit for a sequel, which is likely to feature the Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of Iron Fist/Danny Rand, though it is unknown if Netflix’s Finn Jones will reprise the character due to poor fan reception the first time around.
Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings” stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization. The film also stars Tony Leung as Wenwu [Shang-Chi’s father], Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, as well as Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng.
Joining Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), the official description of Spider-Man: No Way Home reads:
For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.
