Following an article in U.K. News Group Newspaper publication, The Sun — in which Heard alleged that Depp engaged in domestic violence against her on multiple occasions, even reportedly holding her hostage during a Pirates of the Caribbean shoot in Australia — Depp and his team filed a libel lawsuit against the media company.
In November 2020, Depp lost the libel suit in the U.K. High Court with Justice Andrew Nicol presiding. Then, the Sleepy Hollow actor also lost his right to appeal the ruling in the United Kingdom.
However, Depp and Heard still have an ongoing $50 million civil suit in the United States. Recently, Depp scored a rare win in the saga when he was granted a petition for Heard to prove that she donated her $7 million divorce settlement to charities, including Children’s Hospital L.A.
But, long before Depp was the subject of a complicated legal battle, he became a household name for his work in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. His iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow will undoubtedly live on, even though the actor is reportedly being replaced by Margot Robbie in Pirates of the Caribbean 6.
During his tenure in the Pirates franchise, Depp became known as “one of the nicest guys in Hollywood”, even going so far as to spend upwards of $60,000 to keep the POTC crew safe and comfortable while shooting Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011).
A source said at the time said, “Johnny paid out of his own pocket for all 500 of us to have a nice warm waterproof coat. It’s a great morale boost and another example of why he is one of the nicest people in Hollywood.”…If the source was to be believed, the whole expenditure on the coats was more than $60,000 and this was the actor’s move to keep his entourage safe and dry.
At this time, Depp does not have any new acting projects lined up after losing his roles as both Sparrow and Gellert Grindelwald in Warner Bros. Harry Potter Fantastic Beasts franchise. There have, however, been rumors that he could be cast as Gomez Addams in Tim Burton’s Addams Family revival, Wednesday, starring Jenny Ortega.
