Marvel fans may have been disappointed when Marvel Studios pushed back many of its Phase Four releases, but new rumors suggest that the Kevin Feige-led studio may have some extra-special gifts in store for their patient fans. Even though Marvel’s Phase Four is already the biggest Phase of the MCU yet, Marvel may be adding two more films to the mix – the long-rumored Thunderbolts and, at long last, a film focusing on Nova, the Human Rocket.
Fans have been waiting for Nova to show up ever since the Nova Corps was introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). John C. Reilly played a member of Marvel’s space police named Rhomann Dey and James Gunn introduced Nova Prime Irani Rael (Glenn Close).
It seemed like it was only a matter of time before the superhero Nova made his way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel boss Kevin Feige promised fans he would show up soon. And, seven years later the time may be drawing closer. A new report indicates that a solo movie for Nova will begin production in 2023.
This has some fans theorizing that the secret character James Gunn teased for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 (May 23, 2023) could be Nova. Now, of course, the question has become which version of Nova will show up first in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
Richard Rider Came First
Richard Rider was the first Human Rocket. Introduced in Nova #1 (1979) by Marv Wolfman and John Buscema. Rider became Nova after receiving a helmet from Rhomann Dey, last surviving Centurion of the Nova Corps after the destruction of Xandar.
And, MCU fans will remember that Thanos (Josh Brolin) revealed to the Guardians in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) that he destroyed Xander to get the Power Stone that they had left in the hands of the Nova Corps. This could have left only one member remaining, who would have become Nova Prime.
In Marvel Comics, Nova Prime is the host of the immense cosmic power of the Nova Force. The powers included in the Nova Force are Superhuman Strength, Speed, Stamina, and Flight. The Nova Force puts Richard Rider on the same power level as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel. They have both punched their way through spaceships. That’s how he got the nickname the “Human Rocket.”
Sam Alexander Is the Current Human Rocket
Richard Rider was Nova for most of Marvel Comics history and was even once a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, Samuel Alexander was first introduced in Point One #1 (2011) and he officially took on the mantle in 2013’s Nova Vol 5 #1 by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness. And since then Richard Rider has been old news.
Sam Alexander’s father Jesse was a member of the Nova Corps, which Richard has restored. When his father went missing Sam went to search for him. He met Gamora and Rocket Raccoon, who knew Jesse. They gave Sam the Nova helmet and despite his young age, he was able to help stop the Chitari invasion of Earth.
He has held onto the Nova title ever since. And, has even teamed up with other young heroes like Kamala Khan AKA Ms. Marvel, who will be getting her own Disney+ original series in early 2022. Plus, many new fans of the Marvel Universe are more familiar with Sam than Richard.
It does not matter which version of Nova comes to the MCU first — fans of the Human Rocket will be delighted. And hopefully, this does mean he could show up in Guardians 3 alongside Star-Lord/ Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Groot (Vin Diesel), and Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper).
