Shang-Chi features cameos by a number of former Marvel movie characters, including — perhaps most exciting for fans — The Abomination (Tim Roth), who first appeared in The Incredible Hulk (2008), and, briefly, Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.).
But, as it turns out, there’s also a tie to another Phase 4 Marvel Cinematic Universe movie in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. A Black Widow actress shows up in the film, teasing her future involvement in the MCU, perhaps with Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova — next appearing in Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye — who Marvel President Kevin Feige has teased may be one of the new Avengers alongside Shang-Chi himself.
Thanks to a Feige Twitter post from July, Marvel fans already knew that Helen (Jade Xu), one of the Black Widow assassins trained in Dreykov’s (Ray Winstone) Red Room with Belova and Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), would appear in another MCU film — Feige just didn’t say how soon:
One of the Widows, Jade Xu, was born in China, and is a multiple World Wushu Champion. She may even have a brief cameo in a future Marvel movie… Eyes #BlackWidowWatchParty

Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton teased in a recent interview,Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Crettin teased that we’ll see more of many of the characters who show up in the new film:
“Abomination, a lot of those characters who are just popping into our movie for a little bit are there for a reason, and are there for reasons that are yet to be discovered, either through our movie or other movies that are coming out.”
In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down [Taskmaster and Dreykov (Ray Winstone)], Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.
Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Natasha/Black Widow, Florence Pugh stars as Yelena, David Harbour portrays Alexei/The Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz is Melina. “Black Widow” — the first film in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — is directed by Cate Shortland and produced by Kevin Feige.
Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings” stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization. The film also stars [Shang Chi’s father] Tony Leung as Wenwu [The Mandarin], Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, as well as Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng.
Do you hope to see Jade Xu return for more Marvel universe projects?
You can stream Black Widow and the three series in Marvel’s Phase 4 so far — Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany’s WandaVision, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki — on Disney+ anytime.
