MCU fan-favorite actor Tom Holland (Peter Parker/Spider-Man) has been doing his best to not spoil his upcoming film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is due to hit theaters on December 17, 2021.
Holland — who has become famous for letting MCU secrets leak — has given fans some indication of what to expect during his next outing as New York City’s friendly neighborhood super hero, and it seems that we’re in for quite a departure from the young actor’s previous Spider-Man films.
Most recently, Holland shared that the next Marvel movie will be significantly darker than anything fans have seen from the franchise before. An English translation of a Portuguese post reads:
“There are some fight scenes in this movie that are very violent. And it’s a fighting style different from what we’ve seen before. But really you will get to see Spider-Man using his fists in a ‘fight or flight’ situation.”
In another recent interview, the MCU star — who has recently been confirmed for another trilogy — expounded on the fact that his third solo outing will not be nearly as family-friendly as past offerings:
“What people will be really surprised about is that it’s not fun, this film. It’s dark and it’s sad, and it’s going to be really affecting. You’re going to see characters that you love go through things that you would never wish for them to go through. And I was just really excited to kind of lean into that side of Peter Parker.”
We’ve also seen glimpses of the violence that is to come in the second No Way Home trailer when the Multiverse is seemingly breaking wide open and Doctor Strange is powerless to stop the Spidey villains who are forcing their way through.
Additionally, adding to the emotional toll the movie is set to take, there have been numerous reports that he will lose at least one other person who is close to him in the upcoming film — most fans assume it will be either Aunt May or Stark’s longtime right-hand man, Happy Hogan.
Joining Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), the official description of Spider-Man: No Way Home reads:
For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.
Holland and Zendaya (MJ) are joined by Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Stephen Strange), Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), and Alfred Molina (Doctor Octopus) in the film.
