Tom Holland is one of the most popular actors globally and is leading the Marvel Universe with Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). Marvel actors take strength training for their roles incredibly seriously, but apparently not Holland — or at least, so he says.

Tom Holland is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable Marvel stars, including Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man and Chris Hemsworth as Thor. The Avenger entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War (2016) and broke box office records with Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019).

Ending his current contract with Sony and Disney this Winter with Spider-Man: No Way Home, he and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) are opening the Multiverse to a slew of iconic characters and superheroes coming to the MCU.

Tom Holland has to be in fantastic shape to pull off impressive stunts while swinging through New York. Aside from CGI-stunt sequences, Holland performs many practical stunts while filming Marvel movies, including No Way Home.

To get in shape for the role of Peter Parker, Holland used EMS training (Electrical Muscle Stimulation).

While on The Graham Norton Show, Holland shared:

“Have you ever heard of EMS training? You wear this black suit and they put these pads on you and you basically do a yoga class while they electrocute you. It’s awful… It’s like muscle stimulation, but you workout while you use it.”

EMS training is low-impact, high-intensity strength training, with the usual session averaging just 20 minutes. The workout involves sporting a bodysuit that sends electrical pulses into the body, causing your muscles to contract and work harder.

But even a workout pro like Holland feels that 20 minutes might be a bit too long:

“I basically cheated… I did it with my best friend and every time the trainer would go to the bathroom one of us would crank up the machine that my friend was using.”

“You genuinely can’t move, it makes every part of your body shake and it’s awful… It’s a lot of fun and it works but it really is the worst thing I’ve ever done.”

Without the help of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, like Captain America, Black Panther, Iron Man, or even Captain Marvel, Peter turns to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). Spider-Man and Doctor Strange accidentally open a rift in the Multiverse when a spell goes wrong in the Sanctum Sanctorum, unleashing a deadly batch of supervillains, like Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin from previous Spider-Man franchises.

In the official trailer for No Way Home, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock appearance shook the internet. Countless fans began reposting the clip in which Molina says, “Hello, Peter,” but he definitely wasn’t saying hello to Holland’s Peter Parker.

The Marvel collection is growing with each new superhero film and series on Disney+. Marvel films are expanding after the events of Loki, and Marvel characters are being introduced to variants of each character.

Marvel fans, mark your calendars for Spider-Man: No Way Home’s theatrical debut on December 17, 2021.
