The latest casting rumor surrounding the Marvel Cinematic Universe has fans of Agents of SHIELD shaking with excitement. The speculation that Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Quake/ Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) could return to the MCU later this year.

Reports originated on Fandomwire.com, saying:
“[We can] exclusively reveal that Clark Gregg’s Agent Phil Coulson and Chloe Bennet’s Daisy Johnson aka Quake are returning to the MCU for an upcoming project on Disney+! While we couldn’t exactly confirm which series they will appear in, all signs have been pointing to Secret Invasion, which is currently in production.”

Secret Invasion does seem the most like project for the return of the fan-favorite Coulson, as it will also feature former SHIELD Director Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson). It will follow the comic book storyline of the same name and revolve around the infiltration of the shape-shifting aliens, the Skrulls. Ben Mendelsohn will also reprise his Captain Marvel role as the Skrull refugee, Talos.
Agents of SHIELD aired its final episode in August 2020 and star Chloe Bennet has been very vocal about wanting to return to the role of Daisy Johnson. Rumors about her coming back have been circling almost since the end of the show, but at times, felt like a bit of a long shot since Agents of SHIELD had existed somewhat separate from the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by the end of its run.

In a recent TCA panel on the set of Ms. Marvel, set to debut later this year on Disney +, Kevin Feige was asked about the possible return of Agents of SHIELD characters. While he did not confirm the rumors, he also did not outright deny them. Eric Goldman, the current managing editor of Fandom.com who attended the panel, said Feige’s response was simply: “There are often rumors that are true and there are often rumors that are not.”
Thanks for the clarification there, Kevin.
On rumors of #AgentsofSHIELD characters returning, Feige says, "There are often rumors that are true and there are often rumors that are not. It was great fun to have Clark Gregg come back to the MCU in Captain Marvel… Everything else, we’ll just have to see.” #TCA21

How Agents of SHIELD Ended
Even though Agents of SHIELD has not been off the air for long, a lot happened in its little corner of the MCU over the course of its seven seasons. The series followed a small team of SHIELD agents, led by Coulson, investigating mysterious events all over the world – not unlike what a potential WandaVision spinoff starring FBI Agent Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) might look like.

Here are some of the main parts of Agents of SHIELD that fans need to know if either Coulson or Quake show up in Secret Invasion:
The first season found Coulson miraculously alive after being run through by Loki’s scepter in Avengers (2012). Essentially, he was brought back to life using the blood of a Kree, those blue aliens from Captain Marvel (2019). With a new lease on life, he recruits a hacker named Skye to join SHIELD and help them protect the world.

Shenanigans ensue involving everything from evil robots, digital realities, Ghost Rider and the demonic book known as the DarkHold, which may have been retconned in the latest episode of WandaVision. Skye is revealed to actually be Daisy Johnson, the daughter of a powerful inhuman. After Daisy is exposed to Terrigen Mist, she develops the ability to create vibrations similar to earthquakes that she harnesses using mechanical gauntlets.

The final season found Coulson and crew traveling through time before the events of Avengers: Endgame (2020). Coulson was dead, again, and his consciousness downloaded into a Life Model Decoy (LMD). After setting the time stream right, the agents retire and go their separate ways. Coulson stayed on Earth, while Daisy went into space to explore the cosmos.
How they can possibly fit into Secret Invasion or another Disney + project is still up in the air. But fans of Agents of SHIELD are definitely excited for their return. It is also a sign that the MCU might be willing to work in more of the characters from the expanded universe back into the fold. Such as Netflix’s Daredevil star Charlie Cox, who is rumored to appear in Spider-Man 3.
Secret Invasion is already set to bring in a whole slew of new characters into the Marvel universe. Kingsley Ben-Adir, Olivia Colman, and Emila Clark are all set to take on mysterious roles in the thriller series. But there is still plenty of room for at least one or two SHIELD agents to make a cameo.
