On September 23, 2021, the immensely popular Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance ride at Walt Disney World Resort’s Disney’s Hollywood Studios Park debuted a traditional standby queue for the first time ever.

As you can see in the photo above, Guests flooded Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge just after rope drop in an attempt to secure a spot in the standby line.

Later, however, the wait time for the ride dropped off significantly, shocking both Guests and Cast Members in the theme park. Despite two malfunctions that left Guests waiting in line for about 20 minutes each, the line seemingly flowed smoothly for the first part and Guests did not have to wait for hours to ride the attraction.

Galaxy’s Edge Cast Members working at Rise of the Resistance were prepared for a much longer wait. At one point, Guests only had to wait 50 minutes to board the ride.

Prior to today, Rise of the Resistance was the first Disney Parks ride in history to use a virtual queue system. At 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. EST daily, Disney World Guests could attempt to secure a boarding pass for the Star Wars-themed ride, which features sequel trilogy characters like Rey (Daisy Ridley), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), Finn (John Boyega), Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), and the adorable droid BB-8.

The virtual queue process is now available on other Disney rides, including Disney California Park’s WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure at Avengers Campus and EPCOT’s Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, coming October 1, 2021.

As for Disney World’s version of Rise of the Resistance, we can’t know for sure that today’s trend will continue, but it certainly seems that rope drop may not actually be the best time to make a mad dash for Batuu to secure your spot to help defeat the First Order.
