Actor Johnny Depp — most famous for his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise — has faced more than his fair share of personal problems over the course of the past year.
The ongoing legal battle between actor Johnny Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard (Aquaman, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom) has been a popular subject in the entertainment world since last November when Depp lost his libel case in the U.K. High Court with Justice Andrew Nicol presiding.
Following an article in U.K. News Group Newspaper publication, The Sun — in which Heard alleged that Depp engaged in domestic violence against her on multiple occasions, even reportedly holding her hostage during a Pirates of the Caribbean shoot in Australia — Depp and his legal camp filed a libel lawsuit against the media company.
Despite Depp’s loss in the United Kingdom, Depp and Heard still have an ongoing $50 million civil suit in the United States. Recently, Depp scored a rare win in the saga when he was granted his lawyers’ request for Heard to prove that she donated her $7 million divorce settlement to charities, including Children’s Hospital L.A.
Now, Depp has been granted the prestigious Donostia Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival — but, the media events surrounding the award presentation didn’t exactly go according to plan. Per a report about Depp’s press conference:
A press conference at San Sebastian to mark Johnny Depp’s controversial honorary Donostia Award was interrupted…after an undisclosed source played a recording of the actor’s ex-wife Amber Heard.
The recording was of a statement Heard made outside the High Court in London in July 2020 during a libel case brought by Depp against UK newspaper The Sun, in which the court found the tabloid’s claims that Depp was a “wife-beater” to be “substantially true”.
The article went on to note that the press conference did continue after the untimely interruption, with Depp even addressing cancel culture:
“It’s a very complex situation, this cancel culture, or this instant rush to judgement based on essentially what amounts to polluted air,” said the actor, who was due to collect the Donastia Award later on Wednesday evening and was also honoured recently at Karlovy Vary.
At this time, Depp does not have any new acting projects lined up after losing his roles as both Jack Sparrow — Margot Robbie will reportedly replace him in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 — and Gellert Grindelwald in Warner Bros. Harry Potter Fantastic Beasts franchise. There have, however, been rumors that he could be cast as Gomez Addams in Tim Burton’s Addams Family revival, Wednesday, starring Jenny Ortega.
What do you think about Johnny Depp being trolled by an Amber Heard recording?
