We all know that Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni’s The Mandalorian has taken the Star Wars fandom — and beyond — by storm. From the moment Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu (AKA “Baby Yoda”) first graced our television screens on November 12, 2019, America was hooked.
Now, The Mandalorian has inspired a new political party known as — you guessed it — The Mandalorians. U.S. News and World Reportshared details about the party, which even the founder acknowledges is a little bit absurd.
The Mandalorians of Delaware, the First State’s newest political group, seeks to educate individuals about campaigns and key issues. Formed at the start of the year by Will McVay of Dover, who has been active in the Libertarian Party of Delaware for years, the organization was just recognized this week by the Department of Elections as a party that one can join.
The group is still in its infancy, but Mr. McVay is hopeful about its prospects, despite the fact he started it largely as a joke.
McVay shared details about why he created the party with the publication:
In the long run, he is hopeful the Mandalorians can form an alliance of sorts with progressives. Both Libertarian-minded individuals and those on the left support criminal justice reform and social equity, and Mr. McVay believes they can find some common ground in regard to economics, welfare and even gun rights.
He is hoping to grow the party through social media and other avenues, aided by the cultural touchstone that is “Star Wars.” The name is a way to “capture the cultural zeitgeist” that can draw attention to the party in a way a more “typical” name wouldn’t, Mr. McVay said.
In the article, McVay noted that he hasn’t yet consulted an attorney about using the word “Mandalorian”, but he believes elements from the Star Wars franchise qualify as fair use via the United States copyright law’s parody exemption.
However, he also acknowledged that having his new political party on The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm’s radar would actually be “a good problem to have”.
Now, we just have to sit back and anxiously await the bumper stickers and t-shirts next election season…and what would you say to a U.S. Congressperson in beskar?
