Director James Gunn has shared that he has officially begun the critical step of storyboarding Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, set to hit theaters May 5, 2023 — and he’s counting on Rocket Raccoon to keep him on task.
James Gunn is nearly as prolific on social media as he is in the world of comic book film and TV. The Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) helmer is currently busy with projects in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe — Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022) — and the DC Extended Universe — The Suicide Squad (2021) and the HBO Max streamer Peacemaker starring John Cena, due out in January 2022.
Despite his super-human productivity, director James Gunn still somehow manages to find the time to connect with his admiring fans, Tweeting updates on his various projects.
Alexander Vlahos — director of the French Netflix series, Versailles — shared a fun Tweet commenting on an exchange between Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper) and Ego (Kurt Russel) in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), sharing:
“urt Russell calling Rocket a ‘triangle faced monkey’ is the single greatest line in cinema history and I will be taking no further questions at this time. Thank you @JamesGunn
The friendly Tweet prompted James Gunn to take to Twitter to share a surprising progress report on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023). Gunn, who is both writer and director of Guardians 3, took the compliment as motivation to power through a laborious but crucial part of the film’s development, stating:
It actually made me laugh every time Kurt said it, as did Rocket sadly touching his face afterwards, wondering if it really is shaped like a triangle. As I’m drawing storyboards right this moment for Vol 3, a tedious task, it’s good to be reminded of these enjoyable moments.

The process of storyboarding a film can be quite a ponderous task. It involves the creation of the visual representation of the entirety of a film, shot by shot. However, it sounds like memories of the hilarious quips of his Marvel Cinematic Universe fan-favorite characters — like the best buddy of Groot, Rocket — are keeping James Gunn going strong.
Marvel fans are appreciative of his candid Twitter updates, though his social media usage has gotten the director in trouble in the past. In 2018, director James Gunn was fired from Marvel Studios after offensive decade-old Tweets of his re-surfaced.
At the time, the cast of Guardians and Marvel fans largely stood with the embattled director. Drax actor, Dave Bautista, was most vocal in his support of Gunn, publically criticizing Disney and Marvel boss Kevin Feige.
Dave Bautista has recently shared that Guardians 3 will be his final outing as Drax the Destroyer, citing the difficulty of keeping up with the imposing physique of Drax, as well the character just having run his course in the Marvel Cinematic universe — even though Marvel Studios “dropped the ball” with Drax’s backstory with Thanos. Bautista is set to appear as Drax in the upcoming Thor sequel, Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) as well.
The core cast of Guardians has appeared so far in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and its sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), as well as part of the giant Marvel Cinematic Universe ensembles of Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
Marvel fans were first introduced to Peter Quill, Groot, and the rest of their fellow Guardians as a ragtag crew of escaped prisoners with a common beef against Thanos and Ronan as they quested to secure the Infinity Stone, the Power Stone.
Director James Gunn has also stated that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be his final go with the franchise.
Gunn was eventually reinstated by Disney to continue on as the creative force behind one of the biggest properties in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters May 5th, 2023.
The film will return the cast of Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, Sean Gunn as Ravager Kraglin, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Elizabeth Debicki as Kismet, and Pom Klementieff as Mantis.
