James Gunn Returns For ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’

At Disney’s Investors Day event today, numerous new projects across all of Disney’s brands — Star Wars, Marvel, Walt Disney Animation Studios, and more — were announced.

For Guardians of the Galaxy franchise fans, one of the most exciting announcements was the fact that an unexpected Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is in the works for Christmas 2022!

Disney’s official Tweet confirming the project reads:

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. @JamesGunn is back to write and direct. The Original Special is coming to @DisneyPlus in 2022.

This news comes on the heels of the debut of the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, which hit Disney+ this year and delighted fans with an amusing storyline and classic characters, including Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels).

Although details are not yet known about the specifics of the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, it will, presumably follow in this tradition, featuring at least some original cast members from the Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy movies — Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), and Drax (Dave Bautista) could all potentially return!

As per the Tweet, we do have confirmation that James Gunn will be back to direct the special Disney+ holiday event.

Currently, Gunn and the cast are hard at work preparing for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2021) — which will join Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017).

The cast is also set to appear in Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) with Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Taika Waititi (voice of Korg), and more. Details of exactly how the Guardians of the Galaxy crew will fit into the plot have not been revealed at this time.
