Marvel Studios dropped its first trailer for the highly anticipated The Eternals today. However, Marvel fans have got a bone to pick with the new team.

Mainly, they want to know where these immortal beings have been during all the crazy battles that The Avengers had to deal with.

It was somewhat inevitable that Marvel fans would question the whereabouts of an immortal alien race. Indeed, we know that The Eternals have been around for thousands of years, secretly living on Earth. It, therefore, begs the question: why didn’t they help out with Thanos? Or Loki? Or Ultron? The Avengers have had to deal with a fair few world-ending events over the past ten years. Did those battles not warrant their attention?

Marvel fans posed a similar question to Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) after the release of Captain Marvel (2019). It seemed odd that such a powerful hero would be absent for the events of The Avengers (2012), Age of Ultron (2015), and Infinity War (2018). However, this is of course due to external factors relating to our universe. Still, it’s important for Marvel Studios to create a compelling reason that explains the team’s absence.

The teaser blurb for the film suggests that an “unexpected tragedy” will bring the team out of hiding to fight the Deviants. We can’t wait to see the reason Chloé Zhao and Kevin Feige give for their absence.

In the meantime, here’s what fans on Twitter had to say:

Twitter user Alyssa had an amusing suggestion:

the eternals watching the avengers fail to stop their cousin from killing half the universe.

Miss Thandi Muse suggested the team wouldn’t do anything without their own movie first!

Every avengers and guardians fighting against Thanos Meanwhile The Eternals: We aren’t fighting against Thanos before getting our solo movie. Best of luck.

The Bad Guy on Twitter raised a valid point:

If I was an Avenger, I’d definitely HATE The Eternals cause where the hell were y’all at???

The Eternals is the next installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (after Black Widow, of course). The film is directed by Academy Award winner Chloe Zhao, who recently saw huge success with Nomadland (2021). It’s an adaptation of the Marvel comic book series of the same name and follows a team of immortal alien superheroes.

Additionally, the film boasts an all-star cast including the likes of Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, and Kumail Nanjiani. Furthermore, the cast sees two prominent Game of Thrones stars reunite, as both Kit Harington and Richard Madden will feature.

The movie has already proven it won’t shy away from references to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Both Iron Man and Captain America got a shout-out in the trailer, as Richard Madden’s Ikaris suggested he should lead The Avengers in their absence.

Who are The Eternals?

The Eternals are a relatively obscure group of Marvel superheroes. Think the same level as The Guardians of the Galaxy prior to their immense breakout success on the big screen. The heroes are ancient beings created by the Celestials, and they’re often involved in interstellar, universe-ending conflicts. In fact, the Mad Titan himself, Thanos, is an Eternal in the Marvel comics. He’s even the cousin of Thena, played by Angelina Jolie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This supports rumors that we may see the Mad Titan cameo in The Eternals, played once again by Josh Brolin.

The MCU’s Eternals will also introduce a new human hero played by Kit Harington. The star will play Dane Whitman, otherwise known as Black Knight in the film. Other stars in the film include Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, and Don Lee as Gilgamesh.

The film will release in October of this year and it is an adaptation of the Marvel comics serial of the same name, created by Jack Kirby.
