Marvel actor Anthony Mackie will star in a new show from Deadpoolwriters based on the popular video game series, Twisted Metal.
Mackie, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier lead, will front the live-action series that promises to utilize the humor, action, and violence that both Twisted Metal and the Deadpool film franchise are known for.
According to Deadline, Anthony Mackie has been cast in the lead role of John Doe for the Twisted Metal adaptation from Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions. The popular vehicular combat video game franchise has been around since 1995, with the most recent Twisted Metal game launched back in 2015.
Deadline describes the series from Deadpool(2016) writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick as a wild ride that takes place in a crazy, dystopian hellscape, saying,
“Twisted Metal is a high-octane action comedy based on an original take by Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick about a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.”
Anthony Mackie will venture outside the friendly confines of Disney and Marvel Studios for his next starring role. As John Doe, Mackie will portray a wise-cracking, fast-driving milkman with a wicked sense of humor quite different from the personality of his mission-driven character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Head of PlayStation Productions, Asad Qizilbash commented on Mackie’s perfect casting, saying,
“We’re thrilled to have Anthony Mackie on board. His ability to blend comedy, action and drama is perfect for the Twisted world we’re creating.”
Mackie recently made the official move to sign on for Marvel Studio’s upcoming Captain America 4 film written by Falcon and Winter Soldier scribe Malcom Spellman , though few details have been made public at this point. It’s widely assumed that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will receive a second season at Disney+, though no formal plans have been announced.
As of this writing, Twisted Metal series does not have a distribution partner.
