Here is your ultimate guide to everything you need to know about Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! at Disney California Adventure Park.
Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! Ride Experience
Until January 2017, this popular Disney California Adventure Park attraction was not called Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!. Since 1994, the looming building had been the home of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. Disney fans entered a haunted hotel where they would board an elevator that had previously struck by lightning and all of those riding in it had disappeared.
However, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror closed on January 3, 2017, and on May 27, 2017, the new attraction, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! opened and took its place.
Even though the ride underwent a massive retheme, the basic layout of the ride is the same as it was when it was the iconic Tower of Terror. Guests board the ride vehicle — now known as a gantry lift — and are subsequently taken on the ride of a lifetime as they help Groot rescue the other Guardians of the Galaxy.
A total of 22 people can fit in one gantry lift, with two rows of three on one side, three rows of four on the other side, and a back row that can accommodate up to eight Guests.
For those unfamiliar with the ride, the Disneyland website has the following description:
Taneleer Tivan, a.k.a. the Collector, has brought his unique collection of fantastical fauna, relics and species from across the cosmos to earth for the very first time. He offers to show you his newest acquisition… the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket, Drax and Groot are held captive in electrified glass cases that dangle perilously over an abyss.
Join a Rockin’ Rescue Mission
When Rocket escapes, he commandeers a gantry lift and enlists your help on a harrowing mission to rescue his fellow Guardians. Prepare to unleash intergalactic mayhem from the top of the fortress to the bottom, as one of Star-Lord’s awesome mixtapes blasts a classic tune! With incredible special effects, appearances by popular characters, music inspired by the soundtracks from the movies, thrilling free-fall drop sequences and 6 different storylines to experience, this adventure breaks out all the big thrills!
When Disney says that there are six different storylines you can experience, that means that not only will you be able to see different scenes and hear some different dialogue, but you will also experience different songs — and while it is not mandatory to dance along, it sure adds an extra level of fun. You can also experience six different drop sequences!
The songs that Guests have the chance to hear are:
- “Born to be Wild” by Steppenwolf
- “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” by Pat Benetar
- “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5
- “Burning Love” by Elvis Presley
- “Give Up the Funk” by Parliament
- “Free Ride” by The Edgar Winter Group
There is no rhyme or reason to what song you will get on which Gantry Lift, so each ride is a surprise! And don’t forget to check out your ride photo as you exit the Gantry Lift and head into the gift shop.
Where To Find Guardian of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!
While Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! has been open since 2017, it has not always had a land to call its own. That changed on June 4, 2021, when the thrill ride became a part of the newly opened, Marvel-themed land, Avengers Campus.
There are several ways to get to — which means there are also several ways to get to Guardians of the . The is found right next to the Hyperion Theater at the end of Hollywood Boulevard.
As we mentioned, there are several entrances for Guests visiting Avengers Campus — meaning that there are several ways Guests can get to the ride. The most direct entrance to Guardians of the Galaxy is by the Hyperion Theater. Guests can head down Buena Vista Street, take a left, head to the end of Hollywood Blvd. and they will be able to see the attraction on their right.
Another entrance that Guests can use to get to Guardians of the Galaxy will take Guests through Avengers Campus. The entrance can be found across from the California Adventure Winery area, before the entrance to Cars Land. This entrance will bring Guests into the Spider-Man and WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure area of the Park first, but as Guests walk through Avengers Campus, they will make their way to Guardians.
The third and final way to get to Guardians of the Galaxy is really considered a shortcut by regular theme park visitors. If a Guest is in the back of Cars Land, by Radiator Springs Racers and Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters, there is a path that you can take that will bring you behind most of Avengers Campus and deposit you right by the Quinjet, which is next to Guardians of the Galaxy. This is a nice path to take as it is a less-traveled, quiet path.
