Super Nintendo World at Universal Japan has recently been indefinitely delayed due to the ongoing pandemic. That being said, do not panic! Although the grand opening is postponed from its original February 4 date, we have all the details on what to expect when this new expansion does open at Universal Studios Japan.
There is so much to talk about when it comes to Super Nintendo World. So we are going to break it up into mushroom sized bites for you! The land holds two brand new attractions, themed dining and treats, interactive elements are more.
Let’s start at the very beginning, in order to enter into the Super Nintendo World land expansion at Universal Studios Japan you will have to go through a Warp Pipe. OF COURSE! This first unique detail truly sets the bar for the rest of the land as it is so highly themed and immersive — it truly will be like stepping right into your favorite Mario game! For me, I would imagine myself jumping into my favorite Mario game, Paper Mario and the Origami King — don’t @ me.
The Warp Pipe entrance to Super Nintendo World will feature the classic sound effects from the Mario franchise with lights zooming all around you.
Super Nintendo World will feature two brand new attractions: Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, and Yoshi’s Adventure. Mario Kart will anchor the land as the show-stopping attraction you won’t want to miss once Super Nintendo World Opens to Guests. Yoshi’s Adventure will add great kinetic energy to the land as a colorful and more family-friendly attraction.
Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge
This is the part of Super Nintendo World that everyone has been waiting for. Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge will bring Guests through various memorable Mario Kart courses as you attempt to win the Universal Cup! We have already seen first looks at the ride vehicles and the augmented reality glasses that transform riders into Mario.
Race your way to victory! Iconic Mario Kart courses have been brought to life with cutting-edge technology. Challenge enemies with shells! Aim for the finish line with Mario and Peach! The world’s first interactive Mario Kart theme park ride will leave you with a rush of adrenaline!
Remember that the Koopa character is who we call Bowser in North America. Because of this, this reporter assumes that for the North American versions that will soon come to Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort, the name of the attraction will be changed to Mario Kart: Bowsers Challenge.
We cannot wait to see this attraction in action when it opens with Super Nintendo World!
Yoshi’s Adventure will be a family attraction that is both fun and colorful.
Hang on to Yoshi as you search for Captain Toad on a treasure hunt! Get a spectacular view of the Mushroom Kingdom from Mount Beanpole while having fun on this ride that’s perfect for the whole family.
Part of this attraction will be uncovered and visible throughout the land bringing life and vibrancy to Super Nintendo World — and adding to the general atmosphere. We do not know too much about this attraction as Universal Japan has kept it as more of a surprise. However, as more information and photos are revealed we will be sure to report them to you!
After a race on the Mario Kart attraction, you might find yourself famished. Thankfully Universal has you covered! You can find some Mario themed fare to help you gain 1up at the Konopio’s Cafe prepared by Chef Toad himself:
Indulge in fun gourmet dishes crafted by Chef Toad.
Enjoy beautiful views of the Mushroom Kingdom from the windows.
There are a ton more snacks to look forward to including tons themed to Yoshi! You can read more about those and see photos here!
The entire land can be your digital playground with a little help of a Power-Up Band. These innovative new brands are available for purchase for about $30 USD and link to the Universal app. You can use these brands at various touchpoints around Super Nintendo World to interact with both physical and digital elements! For example, you can hit a “?” block in the real world but collect digital coins in the app.
You will also be on the hunt for digital keys in the land that will unlock the boss battle against Bowser Jr!
I am very interested to use this interactive element myself, as I believe it will take the interactive wand elements from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to a new level.
