We know that Universal is building a Super Nintendo World expansion in four of their theme parks around the world. The first of these expansions to open will be the Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan on March 18. Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Orlando Resort, and Universal Studios Singapore will also be getting a Super Nintendo World.

While each park is getting a clone of the Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan there will be some distinct differences at each park. That’s why we decided to create a guide and break down the differences we know so far, and what we may see in the future as these projects begin construction.

Universal Studios Japan

Universal Studios Japan is set to have the grand opening of their Super Nintendo World in just a few days, but before the land opens officially, Universal held soft-openings. Those soft-openings tested everything from the restaurants to the attractions inside of Super Nintendo World, and lucky Guests had the opportunity to see the land before it officially opened.

With the soft-openings, we saw many photos, videos, and reviews from those who were able to visit Super Nintendo World. While there were some positive and negative fan reactions to the reveal of Super Nintendo World within the online fan community, the soft-openings did give us a great idea of the standard Universal is going for with each Super Nintendo World.

As you can see from the photo above, Universal has masterfully themed Super Nintendo World to Nintendo’s most iconic brand, Super Mario. This first Super Nintendo World expansion set fittingly in Nintendo’s home country of Japan and sets the standard of what fans can expect from the other Super Nintendo Worlds to be completed.

We have a full guide on Super Nintendo World USJ here, but what we want to focus on in this article are the things that make the first Super Nintendo World unique.

Each expansion will be incredibly similar, which shouldn’t be a surprise since we have seen Universal do this in the past with the Hogsmeade expansions in their theme parks around the globe. Since Universal’s Islands of Adventure was the first Hogsmeade it is the standard on what we base comparisons off of, as we will for Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan.

The biggest factor for differentiating Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan will be localization. For example in Japan, the character we all know as Bowser is called King Koopa. Because of this, the main attraction that anchors Super Nintendo World is going to be called Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge — However, when the attraction is brought to the United States at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort, we expect the name to be changed to Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge.

It is a small change, but it is an example of how some names and potentially food and merchandise items will be changed in order to localize the land for a specific audience. We will continue to compare the other Super Nintendo World expansion back to Universal Studios Japan to draw more comparisons.

Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood will be the next Universal location to open a Super Nintendo World expansion. Construction is moving quickly on the lower lot of Universal Studios Hollywood to complete Super Nintendo World. You can view the video and photos of the current construction here.

By looking at the construction and having knowledge of the limited space at the lower lot on Universal Studios Hollywood, we assume that this Super Nintendo World will be lacking some elements, such as the Yoshi’s Adventure attraction that can be found at Super Nintendo World USJ.

Yoshi’s Adventure is a slow-moving family attraction that is described by Universal as:

Hang on to Yoshi as you search for Captain Toad on a treasure hunt! Get a spectacular view of the Mushroom Kingdom from Mount Beanpole while having fun on this ride that’s perfect for the whole family.

This attraction is elevated at Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan and since we can see the construction from the top down of Super Nintendo World Universal Studios Hollywood, we can confirm that we haven’t seen any indication of the Yoshi’s Adventure attraction being constructed.

Universal has yet to confirm details on Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood, but since construction is moving quickly we hope to get those details soon!

Universal Orlando Resort

Universal is constructing a brand-new theme park at the Universal Orlando Resort. This theme park will be called Epic Universe, and will be the home of what we believe will be the largest Super Nintendo World. This is due to the fact that this version of Super Nintendo World is being built in a dedicated space in a new park, unlike the other Super Nintendo World expansions that are being fit into existing theme parks.

If you are a Universal fan and have been following the announcements of Super Nintendo World you likely saw, as we did, models for Super Nintendo World — including a Donkey Kong land!

Here is the model that we saw come to life at Universal Studios Japan of Super Nintendo World-

And here is a look at the Donkey Kong model:

It is possible that due to a larger amount of space that can be used for Super Nintendo World at Epic Universe, we will see the Donkey Kong model come to life at that theme park!

As the Epic Universe project was paused and then restarted we will have to wait for more information from Universal as they move forward on Epic Universe. We are excited to see what the creative team at Universal does with Super Nintendo World at this new park!

Universal Studios Singapore

Universal Studios Singapore is another theme park to be getting a Super Nintendo World expansion. This is big news for a very little theme park!

We love Universal’s Singapore theme park as it is home to a ton of unique attractions. While not much is known right now on its planned Super Nintendo World expansion we anticipate it to also be small — Similar to Universal Studios Hollywood. For example, it may not have Yoshi’s Adventure due to size, but again, Universal has given fans limited information on the details of this expansion.

Universal Studios Beijing

Lastly, we have Universal’s soon-to-be open Universal Beijing park. This park will notably not feature a Super Nintendo World as the characters of Nintendo are not widely known in mainland China due to the censorship laws in the country. But with that being said, we will update you as we get information.

And that brings you up to speed on all the anticipated differences between each of the Super Nintendo World expansions!
