Hawkeye was Marvel Studios’ final gift to Marvel fans in 2021. The first year of Marvel’s Phase Four brought some of the biggest changes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and they have been received with mixed feelings. Marvel fans have been taking to ranking the many offerings of the year from best to worst. And there have been some great things that everyone loved like Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) but one thing that they seem to agree was the worst – the final moments of the Hawkeye finale.

*Spoilers for the post-credit scene for Hawkeye, obviously*

For those who have seen the finale scene of the Holiday series starring Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton AKA Hawkeye and Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop AKA Hawkeye, it features the full version of  “Save the City” from “Rogers the Musical”.

The scene from the first episode of Hawkeye in which Clint turns off his hearing aid before leaving early had fans delighted with the idea of a Marvel musical. At the time they begged for more and posters for the musical were even in the background of Spider-Man: No Way Home. But the post-credit scene for Hawkeye has fans regretting what they wished for.

The “Save the City” number was composed by Broadway legend Marc Shaiman with lyrics by Scott Wittman. The number even featured really Broadway actors like Tom Feeney as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Aaron Nedrick as Tony Stark/Iron Man, and Adam Pascal as New Yorker cheering on the Avengers.

But that big musical number appears to have been lost on fans like CameronSilas who said:

“I hate how that awful post credit scene just distracted me from that amazing episode??? really really disappointing #hawkeye.”

A common complaint online is that it does nothing to set up the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But one suggestion via BuckywithGucci had a perfect solution that would have made the campy post-credit scene a major success rather than a massive disappointment, saying:

“again, marvel just wasted a great opportunity to show sam and bucky watching the rogers the musical at the end of hawkeye, it would be the perfect cameo”

Adding Captain America’s best friends Sam Wilson/Captain America — the superhero formerly known as Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) looking on in shock would have tied a bow on the scene.

There was also the option to have Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) add it to her New York City tour while she was in town. Marvel fans would have loved to know how she felt about the way her sister Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow was portrayed.

Some other users had mixed feelings about the scene like CanonCastiel who shared:

“The Hawkeye post credit scene is my new favorite thing in the worst way.”

However, the prevailing opinion is that the Hawkeye post-credit scene is the worst in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and fans are simply disappointed this Christmas. Like SarahAnnRhoades who was let down by it, saying:

“Liked the season finale of Hawkeye, but the post-credit scene was one of the worst, most pointless things I’ve seen. All the plot developments/characters that could have been teased/hinted at, and we get a musical number that seems like it will never end?”
