..[the film] smashed Labor Day box office records, generating $71.4 million in ticket sales for the holiday weekend…
…“Shang-Chi,” the first Marvel flick with an Asian superhero as the lead, is already getting rave reviews, drawing the second highest box office haul — behind ‘Black Widow’ — for a movie release during the pandemic.
Black Widow, as Marvel fans know, has garnered its fair share of controversy since it was released both in theaters and on the Disney+ Premier Access tier on July 9, 2021. The simultaneous release led leading lady Scarlett Johansson to sue The Walt Disney Company for $50 million due to an alleged breach of contract.
As for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, director Destin Daniel Crettin has indicated that a sequel has seemingly already been greenlit, with many Marvel fans hoping for a storyline involving Danny Rand/Iron Fist, a popular Marvel Comics character who was previously played by Finn Jones in the ill-received 2017 Netflix Iron Fist series.
At this time, a release date for Shang-Chi 2 has not been announced. The Marvel movie’s star, Simu Liu, has, however, expressed his excitement about being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe:
“My nerves were sky-high. I was an actor from Toronto, and I really had never allowed myself to imagine being a part of the MCU. I mean, it’s the craziest dream that someone can possibly dream. And, uh, Nora did such a great job of putting me at ease and just, you know, being in the moment with me, and we had such a beautiful chemistry.”
Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings” stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization. The film also stars Tony Leung as Wenwu, Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, as well as Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng.
