The guide for sprawling new animated series will be Jeffery Wright (HBO’s Westworld) as the Watcher Uatu. Wright recently called his character “Marvel’s Biggest Fan” as he sits back at observes all the new timelines. He described the Watcher as:

“Something like the most dramatic being in all the known universe […] he’s a fairly dramatic guy.  He’s a fairly powerful guy.  He’s kind of overseeing the entire MCU. He’s overseeing the multiverses, and […] he plays somewhat of a Rod Sterling role, here.  Kind of narrating, kind of not. In some ways, as maybe the biggest Marvel fan there is.”

Wright also claimed that the Watcher has “the highest cable bill that you can possibly imagine.” Maybe he should have gone with the Disney+ Bundle to save money.

The first episode of the ten-episode anthology series, Marvel’s What If…? debuted on August 11 and bring back Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in unique alternate realities within the new Marvel multiverse. It comes from a long line of Marvel Comics of the same name that also features the Watcher and each of which showcases a strange new alternate reality.

The first episode of the first animated entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe focused on one where Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) took the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers AKA Captain America (Chris Evans) and becomes Captain Carter/Captain Britain. She teams up with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) who never became the Winter Soldier.

There will also be one where Captain America and possibly Wanda Maximoff AKA Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) are zombies being hunted by Peter Parker AKA Spider-Man (Tom Holland). The trailer also revealed a timeline where N’Jadaka AKA Erik Stevens AKA Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) saved Tony Stark AKA Iron Man (not voiced by Robert Downey Jr.). Also it hinted at the return of Ultron.

One alternate timeline that Marvel fans are anxiously awaiting is the one where T’Challa became Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt). It will be actor Chadwick Boseman’s final appearance. However, some actors will not be returning to their MCU roles such as Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Brie Larson as Carol Danvers AKA Captain Marvel, and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark AKA Iron Man.

While it is not known exactly why some actors are not returning for the first Marvel Studio’s animated series, Dave Bautista (Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy) said he was not even asked.

The official description of Marvel’s What If…? is:

“What If…?” flips the script on the MCU, reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways. Marvel Studios’ first animated series focuses on different heroes from the MCU, featuring a voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their roles. Directed by Bryan Andrews with AC Bradley as head writer, “What If…?” launches exclusively on Disney+ on August 11, 2021.

When the series was announced along with the rest of Marvel’s Phase 4 it did not appear to be a part of the MCU but with Loki and WandaVision opening the Marvel Multiverse before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (March 25, 2022), characters from this new series could be popping up in the future of Kevin Feige’s Marvel Universe.
