Scottish actor Ewan McGregor is set to return to the Star Wars universe as Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi for the first time in nearly 20 years — and he’s more than a little bit excited about it.
The actor, who has been making the press rounds now that filming for Deborah Chow’s Obi-Wan Kenobi is finally underway, recently did a Variety Actors on Actors segment with The Mandalorian’s leading man, Pedro Pascal (Din Djarin).
McGregor shared details about some of the thrills he has been experiencing on set for the special event series — and teased that long-time Star Wars fans are likely to feel childhood-like happiness when they watch the show in 2022:
“I don’t think I’d be giving away a secret,” McGregor quipped. “I’ve got to be so careful. There’s no secret to when this series is being set, but I had to walk past two Stormtroopers. I realized I’ve never acted with a Stormtrooper because mine were clones, you know? It was the clone army. So I’d never seen a Stormtrooper. So I was walking past them in this scene. I turned around — and I was 6 years old again.” He added, “Insane. I was feeling like I was 6 again or something because I’m so close to one and I got a fright, you know? So crazy. Then I asked someone, ‘Were there Stormtroopers in my films? Because I don’t think I’ve seen a Stormtrooper for real before.’ They were like ‘No, they weren’t Stormtroopers; they were clones.’ And Jawas, I had another scene with a little Jawa.”
During the 2020 Disney Investor Day event, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy confirmed where the series falls in the Star Wars timeline. As expected, it will take place about ten years after George Lucas’s Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005).
The show will follow Jedi Master Kenobi’s self-imposed exile on Tatooine following the execution of Emperor Palpatine’s Order 66. It will also feature the return of prequel trilogy actor Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/Sith Lord Darth Vader.
Kennedy has teased that fans are in for the “rematch of the century”, indicating we have at least one epic lightsaber battle to look forward to next year when the Jedi Master and the Dark Lord, his former Padawan, return to the Star Wars franchise.
As McGregor insinuated, the exact plot of the show is being kept top secret, but the full cast list revealed that Bonnie Piesse and Joel Edgerton will be reprising their roles as Beru and Owen Lars, Luke Skywalker’s aunt and uncle. So, the odds are good that young Luke’s childhood before the original trilogy will play a role in the series.
