When Star Trek, Cloverfield, and Mission Impossible‘s JJ Abrams took over Star Wars: Episode IX from Colin Trevorrow, expectations for the final film in the Skywalker Saga were high.
Abrams has cut his chops in the action and sci-fi genres, so many Star Wars fans thought he could bring a certain je ne sais quoi to the conclusion of the story that George Lucas started over 40 years ago with Star Wars: A New Hope (1977).
The final cut of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019), however, left the Star Wars fan community divided — though, perhaps, not quite as divided as Rian Johnson’sStar Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017).
And then, there were those who really just wanted Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Zorii Bliss (Keri Russell) to get together.
Now, rumors that an Abrams cut of the film (similar to Zack Snyder’s Justice League Snyder cut) exists have Star Wars fans online going nuts.
Twitter user Oberje has strong opinions about the end of the sequel trilogy:
If there is a “JJ Abrams Cut” of The Rise of Skywalker I don’t want it, I want the sequel trilogy to die a quiet death of obscurity as better Star Wars chapters slowly restore balance to the force. Step one: re-hire Gina Carano

Price of Reason finds the dubious claims of an Abrams cut unlikely (as most fans do), but still wouldn’t want to watch even if they were true:
STAR WARS LEAKS: Even if a 4 Hour JJ Abrams cut of Rise of Skywalker did exist, I’d never want to watch it…I wouldn’t wish that upon my worst enemy.

Gen also agrees that an Abrams cut might not fix the issues that many in the Star Wars fan community had with the 2019 film:
WB releases the SynderCut and then all of a sudden it’s “AyerCut” this, “AbramsCut” that. And while I can’t speak for Suicide Squad, I just find it hard to believe that Rise of Skywalker would’ve been than much better with an additional 2hrs of runtime.

On the other side of things, however, fans like Charles Doling are directly asking Abrams to release his cut of the Star Wars movie if, in fact, it does exist:
please release the Abrams Lucas cut of the rise of sky walker. From my son Matthew who is autistic.

Finally, some social media users think that if the rumored Abrams cut is real, it will see the light of day for purely monetary reasons. Gregory commented:
I’m putting money on a release of “the Abrams cut” available exclusively on Disney+. They saw how well the Snyder cut went and the mouse never misses a trick to cash in.
