The idea of a follow-up series to The Office US (2005 — 2013), whether in the form of a new season, a feature-length reunion, a spinoff, or even a movie, has been talked about since the show wrapped back in 2013 following its nine-season run, and is something many stars from the beloved binge-worthy series have expressed an interest in doing. Recently, Melora Hardin (Jan Levison) and Craig Robinson (Darryl Philbin) became the latest stars to say they’d love to return. Now, The Office is finally about to make its long-awaited comeback.

The Office US Spinoff Is Official

In January, The Office US showrunner Greg Daniels told Deadline he was exploring ideas with a team of writers for a new spinoff series. Not to be confused with the upcoming limited series The Office Australia, which is an Aussie version of the original Ricky Gervais (David Brent)-led British sitcom, The Office (2002 — 2003), Daniels’ spinoff will take place in the same world as the US show, focusing on an entirely new set of characters.

In an interview with Collider in 2022, Daniels compared the idea of a spinoff to Star Wars, citing the live-action Disney+ show The Mandalorian (2019) as an example, saying, “I think it would just be sort of like an extension of the universe, you know what I mean, like the way [The] Mandalorian is like an extension of Star Wars.”

So it’s fitting then that Deadline has reported that Star Wars actor Domhnall Gleeson has been cast in The Office spinoff alongside Sabrina Impacciatore (White Lotus). “Sources close to production tell Deadline” that the actors are the first two members of a new “ensemble.”

However, considering Gleeson’s A-lister status and an acting resume that would fit across a hundred reams of Dunder Mifflin paper (Harry Potter, Peter Rabbit, About Time, the list goes on and on), which includes his role as the First Order villain-turned-Rebel-spy General Armitage Hux in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, he’s likely going to lead that new cast.

While the 2003 show has many big names — Steve Carell (Michael Scott), John Krasinski (Jim Halpert), Mindy Kaling (Kelly Kapoor), and Ed Helms (Andy Bernard) — they were relatively unknown at the time, which makes Gleeson’s casting all the more surprising.

In a sense, he replaces Steve Carell as the biggest star in what can now be comfortably described as a “universe” given Greg Daniels’ Star Wars analogy — unless another Hollywood megastar is announced down the line. Like Gleeson, Carell has a long list of movies under his belt (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Evan Almighty, Get Smart, the Anchorman movies, and the Despicable Me/Minions movies, to name a handful).

The premise for the new series remains under tight wraps, though we’re sure more casting will be confirmed in the coming weeks and months. That said, it’s unlikely any actors from the flagship series will be reprising their roles. Meanwhile, Steve Carell and John Krasinski have reunited in the upcoming Ryan Reynolds fantasy-comedy movie IF (2024).
