We know we speak for all Indiana Jones fans when we say we are thrilled to be seeing Harrison Ford picking up the famous hat and whip and returning to his role as the titular globetrotting archeologist.
Lucasfilm and Disney have already started production on the highly-anticipated Indiana Jones 5, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)) and Antonio Banderas (The Mask of Zorro (1998), Shrek (2001)) joining Ford in rounding out the star-studded cast.
Now, more photos have been revealed from the set of the movie, showing us Antonio Banderas in costume for the first time, as well as a potential insight into the plot of the fifth installment in the adventurous Indiana Jones franchise, directed by James Mangold and also starring Mads Mikkelsen.
Just Jared shared a selection of set photos featuring Ford, Waller-Bridge, and Banderas in-between shots while filming in Castellammare del Golfo, Italy. Although we can only see the back of Banderas’s head, it is a fun insight into the whip-cracking action coming our way!

Interestingly, photos were taken recently on the set of the movie with Harrison Ford and Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character next to a battalion of Roman soldiers. The photos have fans theorizing that Indiana Jones 5 will have some kind of time-travel aspect to it, with gladiators, shields, and rowboats not the usual attire for 1960s characters.

James Mangold, the director taking over from Steven Spielberg, has stated that the upcoming movie will take place in the 1960s. The time-travel plot theory continues with a recent video from Disney’s Indiana Jones set confirming the sequel will see the return of the Nazis. By 1960, the Nazis were long defeated.
Other fan theories include the archeologist being a part of the “space-race” of the 1960s, so whether Indy goes to space or time-travels, he’s certainly in for another sci-fi adventure after the events of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)!
Production on Indiana Jones 5 had to pause back in June due to Stars Wars icon Harrison Ford injuring his shoulder while filming. Ford later returned to the set and was pictured with his arm in a sling, with Mangold working around the injury until Ford could return.
The 79-year-old actor has played the adventure hero in all four Indiana Jones films: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Temple of Doom (1984), The Last Crusade (1989), and the most recent installment Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Alongside Ford, who last wore the fedora hat in 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, we can look forward to the acting talents of Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal), Shaunette Renée Wilson (Black Panther (2018)), Thomas Kretschmann (Westworld), Toby Jones (What If…?) and Boyd Holbrook (Beckett).
Unfortunately, those eagerly awaiting the release of Indiana Jones 5 now have a longer wait than anticipated. Disney recently announced the theatrical delay of multiple upcoming movies, including an 11-month pushback on Indy from July 29, 2022, to June 30, 2023.
The delay also includes numerous upcoming Marvel Studios movies, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022).
