Back in August, one star of showrunner Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian, announced that the third season of the bounty hunter series would begin filming in September. This came shortly after speculation of just when Mando would start its production process, and if the leading man, Pedro Pascal (Din Djarin), would be required for the Disney+ show to get underway.

We know now when one of the supporting stars will begin their Season 3 journey, and it just so happens to be today.

October 13, 2021, will mark the on-set return of Greef Karga actor, Carl Weathers. It was Weathers who first confirmed around when The Mandalorian Season 3 would begin filming in August with the actor also stating he will both star in and direct for the series. Weathers directed the second season episode “Chapter 12: The Seige” starring Pascal’s bounty hunter and fired Star Wars actress, Gina Carano as her character, Cara Dune. His return in front of and behind the camera is sure to delight many fans of the series.

It isn’t completely clear what direction the new season from Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni (Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars Resistance) will take. While The Mandalorian Season 2 finale did wrap up the quest to get Grogu (“Baby Yoda”) into the hands of the Jedi — that Jedi just so happened to be original trilogy Jedi Master Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) –, the end of the second season, as well as featuring these guest stars, also suggested how the symbolic Darksaber might play into the future of the television series.

Bo-Katan Kryze’s (Katee Sackhoff) hunt for the legendary Mandalorian weapon came to a startling end when Din Djarin won it from Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) in combat while battling the villain and his Dark Trooper squad. However, Bo-Katan’s determination to become the rightful ruler of Mandalore in the Star Wars galaxy is expected to be a part of the upcoming series — even Sackhoff said her Nite Owls leader had “unfinished business”.

While much of the former cast hasn’t officially confirmed their reprisal in the third outing for the Disney+ smash, Weathers has.

In a new tweet from the Rocky star, Weathers said:

Mandalorian, season #3 begins for Yours Truly, on tomorrow. Greef Karga will be back on Disney+. #BePeace

Just when Star Wars fans will see Weathers’ Greef Karga, Pascal’s Din Djarin, and any other returning cast members remains to be seen. Previous reports indicated that the production of Deborah Chow’s Obi-Wan Kenobi event series in the Star Wars universe may have held up Favreau’s The Mandalorian getting underway — the two shows use the same filming technology, The Volume.

However, it has also been noted that Pascal’s starring role as Joel in HBO’s The Last of Us, has also allegedly complicated matters. This, of course, can be worked around as Pascal is not always needed for filming due to the nature of his costume, the iconic Mandalorian Beskar helmet and armor.

The Mandalorian Season 3 will be just another piece in Lucasfilm’s additions to a pre-sequel trilogy era of Star Wars. The upcoming The Book of Boba Fett and the new Ahsoka Tano series, Ahsoka starring Rosario Dawson, will also be part of this pocket of stories in the Skywalker Saga timeline for the overarching Star Wars franchise.

Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic — a show Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced last year and would have also slotted into The Mandalorian timeline — is now “no longer in active development”, likely due to the series reportedly being anchored by Carano’s marshal of the New Republic.
