Disney is returning to the successful formula of adapting their legendary animated properties into live-action (and heavy CGI) remakes once again with a reboot of The Little Mermaid (1989). Hoping to follow the box office success of recent remakes like The Lion King (2019) directed by Jon Favreau, Cinderella (2015), and Beauty and the Beast (2017), the modern re-telling of The Little Mermaid —based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale is sure to hit nostalgic Disney audiences right in the feels.

The latest set photos from the upcoming The Little Mermaid film were obtained by Just Jared and feature Halle Bailey as Ariel and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric. The co-stars were photographed as the stars were boarding a boat adorned with flowers, bringing to mind the romantic boat ride of the “Kiss the Girl” scene in the 1989 classic film.

The photos appear to capture the live-action recreation of one of the most memorable scenes — and songs — from the original Little Mermaid film — the “Kiss the Girl” sequence. In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ The Little Mermaid (1989), “Kiss the Girl” is sung by Samuel E. Wright as Sebastian the crab in a performance that was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song. The sequence involved Sebastian staging a romantic boat ride in an effort to convince Prince Eric (Christopher Daniel Barnes) to kiss the voiceless Ariel (Jodi Benson) and break Ursula’s curse. To do so, the determined crab enlisted the help of the animals in the secluded lagoon to serenade the couple for the perfect fairy tale setting.
