During the temporary theme park closures at Disneyland, Imagineers were hard at work as they reimagined the classic Fantasyland attraction Snow White’s Scary Adventures to Snow White’s Enchanted Wish.

After the ride officially debuted to Guests on April 30, it received some backlash due to the “True Love’s Kiss” scene in the attraction. And now, one Disney Imagineer is speaking out on the controversy.

Snow White’s Enchanted Wish Backlash

In case you haven’t heard, Snow White’s Scary Adventures was reimagined into Snow White’s Enchanted Wish in order to make the attraction more appealing to a larger crowd and more friendly for children. Disney Imagineers were hard at work as they reimagined certain aspects of the ride, including creating a new scene that shares Snow White and The Prince’s first kiss.

Now, the “True Love’s Kiss” scene is facing some mixed reviews online. The San Francisco Gate published an article about the changes, saying that true love is not possible if both parties do not give consent to kiss. (They didn’t acknowledge that in the Disney story, The Prince thinks Snow White has passed away when he kisses her.)

The SF Gate’s article was met with a lot of backlash online. While some agreed with the authors’ opinions, others took to social media to defend Disney’s additions to the Snow White attraction, saying that “True Love’s Kiss” is part of the classic Disney fairy tale and arguing that Walt Disney himself would be proud of the attraction’s new scene.

An Imagineer Weighs In

Now, Disney Imagineer of over 30 years Jim Schull is speaking out on the recent controversy. In a Tweet, Schull expressed how people are, of course, allowed to have their own opinions and dislike the story, but there is no denying the incredible work that Disney Imagineering has done on the ride:

Allowing for the fact that cultural changes occur over decades it must be acknowledged that in the context of the tale on which the film is based that the ride is accurate. People are of course allowed to dislike the story but the Imagineering team did a spectacular job! #Disney

In the Tweet, Shull also stated that over time, cultural changes occur but in “the context of the tale”, the reimagined Snow White attraction is “accurate” to the film it is based on. Keep in mind that Shull, although a longtime Disney Imagineer, was not involved in the reimagining of the attraction.

Snow White’s “Happily Ever After”

In a video promoting Snow White’s Enchanted Wish, John Gritz, principal concept designer with Walt Disney Imagineering, explained why he is so excited about the reimagining:

“We’re finally giving Snow White the happily ever after that she deserves. The star of the show is Snow White so we thought it would be really, really important to introduce her early on. So we have a new dancing Snow White character that actually now dances with Dopey and the interaction between them as you move through the cottage is really kind of almost cinematic.”

Since the attraction sparked some mixed reviews online, Gritz has not released any statements regarding the “True Love’s Kiss” scene.

Disneyland President Shares Excitement

Additionally, Disneyland President Ken Potrock has expressed his excitement for the reimagining of the Snow White-themed ride on a few different occasions recently.

On April 23, a few days before Disneyland’s historic reopening, the Disneyland President took to Instagram to share how he cannot wait for Guests to experience the new attraction, saying “I cannot wait until you all can experience Snow White’s Enchanted Wish!” and “It’s full of so many wonderful new elements.”

And on April 27, Potrock appeared on the D23 Inside Disney Podcast to share details about the reimagined ride. He expressed how he was involved in crafting the story, saying, “We got a group of Imagineers together to really  re-craft the story so that it had the ability to have a happy ending.”

Potrock hasn’t spoken out since Guests have experienced the ride, however.
