There’s been a lot of speculation regarding future Disney movies recently, including whether or not we can expect live-action remakes of “Pocahontas” and “Aladdin 2.” Now, we’re hearing that Disney could be looking into reproducing “Atlantis: The Lost Empire” with none other than Tom Holland as the star.
WeGotThisCovered reports that Disney is working on a remake of “Atlantis: The Lost Empire,” and the team behind the remake is considering current “Spider-Man” actor, Tom Holland, for the lead role. If you’re unfamiliar with the 2001 Walt Disney Animation Studios film “Atlantis,” here’s the official synopsis:
An inexperienced young adventurer becomes the key to unraveling an ancient mystery when he joins up with a group of daredevil explorers to find the legendary lost empire of Atlantis. A naive-but-determined museum cartographer Milo Thatch dreams of completing the quest begun by his late grandfather, a famous explorer. When a journal surfaces, an eccentric billionaire funds an expedition and the action shifts to high gear.
It’s no surprise for Disney to want to remake as many classic animated films as possible. If an animated movie was wildly successful and has a loyal fan base, why wouldn’t Disney want to recreate that film into a live-action version? Disney’s live-action remakes are all but guaranteed to make it big at the box office, and with the exception of 2019’s “Dumbo,” the most recent reimagined Disney stories like “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin” have been hits so far. But “Atlantis”? That story isn’t exactly considered a fan-favorite. The film was pretty much considered a box office flop at the time of its release almost two decades ago, and the characters aren’t widely memorable. We can’t even remember the last time we saw “Atlantis” merchandise.
Perhaps Disney wants to take these remakes in a new direction, since producing live-action versions of animated films without such loyal fanbases could yield a surprisingly successful result. “Atlantis: The Lost Empire” wasn’t the biggest movie of its time by any means, but the film did have a good story and lovable characters. Plus, if there’s anyone we could picture playing the lead role of nerdy mapmaker Milo Thatch, it’s the charming and awkward Tom Holland. And after seeing Zendaya alongside Holland in “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” we could totally see her play Kida, an underrated character we’ve been wanting to see initiated as an official Disney Princess ever since “Atlantis” debuted in 2001.
We bet we’ll have to wait a while for Disney to announce the next few live-action remakes, but we anticipate they’re coming soon.
