Directed by Rob Marshall, The Little Mermaid brought the magic of the original 1989 Alan Menken and Howard Ashman classic to live-action, largely with the help of its phenomenal cast. This included Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as the Sea Witch Ursula, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and Awkwafina as Scuttle.
Although it never hit the same heights as previous live-action remakes like The Lion King (2019) and Aladdin (2019), the film was still one of Disney’s most successful movies in 2023, eventually becoming the eighth highest-grossing film at the box office and elevating the cast to superstar status. This includes Daveed Diggs, who welcomed a new baby with his partner, Emmy Raver-Lampman.

Daveed Diggs, an actor known for his Tony Award-winning performance in Hamilton (2015) and for playing Sebastian in The Little Mermaid, and Emmy Raver-Lampman, who stars as Allison Hargraves in the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy, announced that they were pregnant on September 26, 2023. Now, almost six months later, they revealed that the baby had been born in an adorable (and relatable) joint Instagram announcement.

Diggs echoed the sentiment in a comment, saying, “Shout out to [Adam Mansbach] for writing the realest children’s book of all time,” referring to the parental classic Go the F— To Sleep (2011), which was a New York Times best-seller and read in audio form by Samuel L. Jackson.
Fans and celebrities celebrated with the couple. Diggs’ Little Mermaid co-star Halle Bailey, who gave birth to a baby boy earlier this year, said, “Congratulations! Love you!” Hamilton alum Joshua Henry, who played Gaston in the live television version of Beauty and the Beast (2022), said, “Wow!!! Congratulations to you and [Daveed Diggs]!! The sleep will come.”
