Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter is back and this time she’s got a shield. The Marvel fan-favorite character — voiced by Atwell in the Disney+ series premiere of the animated series What If…? — has been reimagined as an alternate timeline version of Captain America. Now What If…? director Bryan Andrews wants Peggy Carter to get her own live-action Captain Carter movie in the MCU led by Hayley Atwell.
What If…? is the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe series to launch on Disney+, following WandaVision starring Elizabeth Olsen, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier starring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, and Loki starring Tom Hiddleston. The series debut episode premiered on Disney+ on August 11, and Hayley Atwell’s vocal performance as Captain Carter has excited fans of Agent Peggy Carter. Maybe her biggest fan is What If…? director Bryan Andrews who says it “…would be amazing” to bring Atwell to a live-action Marvel movie as the Multiverse superhero.
Marvel Touts Peggy Carter as new Captain America on Social Media
In advance of the premiere episode of the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe series, What If…? on Disney+, Marvel caused some controversy by swapping out Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) for Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) on the social media pages for Captain America. Some Marvel fans pointed out that the original Captain America, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) intended for Sam Wilson to take on the mantle of Cap when he passed along his famous shield to him at the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame (2018).
Captain Carter and the Marvel Multiverse
After the events of Loki upended the status quo of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, allowing the infinite possibilities of the Multiverse to supersede ye olde Sacred Timeline, anything is possible. In What If…? Marvel audiences get to explore some of the unlimited branch realities of the Multiverse through retellings of Marvel origins and storylines — with new takes on familiar characters like Black Panther, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Star-Lord.
Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
What If…? has brought on an incredible voice cast to bring life to the Multiverse — returning many MCU favorite actors to reprise their roles, and recasting a few others. Hayley Atwell returns to the role of Peggy Carter that she first played in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). The popularity of the character led to a well-received ABC special one-shot Agent Carter, which led to a series of the same name that ran for two seasons from 2015 to 2016.
Atwell also appeared as Peggy Carter on the big screen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Ant-Man (2015), and shared a famous slow dance with Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) in Avengers: Endgame (2019).
What If…? Director Wants a Live-Action Captain Carter Movie starring Hayley Atwell
Now What If…? director and writer Bryan Andrews is sharing his hopes for more Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Speaking to THR, Andrews said he wants Captain Carter to appear in a live-action MCU film, saying,
“…while we don’t know if this is necessarily going to happen, it would be amazing if they would just do a Captain Carter movie. Just get Hayley Atwell in the suit, give her her own franchise and just have her blow doors [off the hinges] like hells to the yeah.”
What If…? producer Brad Winderbaum has already announced that there will be a second season of the series, and that Marvel fans can expect more of Atwell’s Captain Carter. In a presser, the producer revealed why he feels Captain Carter is a lynchpin of the Multiverse of What If…?, saying,
“We realized, I think, early on in development as we were starting to get AC [Bradley’s] scripts and starting to look at the arc of the series that there was going to be a character that bubbled up and became more important. Not more important than the rest, but had a strong relationship with The Watcher, who is really our driving force behind the series, and that’s Captain Carter.”
This begs the question: will the Marvel Cinematic Universe create live-action films of alternate timelines now that the infinite possibilities of the Multiverse has been unleashed? Could we see a Peggy Carter variant step into the MCU timeline and lead the Avengers in Avengers 5? Marvel fans will just have to watch and find out.
