With many of us still deciding to quarantine and trying our best to stay safe during this ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it seems as though many people are also still holding off travel in 2021.
While the United States has continued to vaccinate and while we continue to wait for travel restrictions to be completely lifted, it has many Walt Disney World Guests wondering if they should wait until 2022 to book a trip.
Here’s why we think 2022 could be a much “normal” Walt Disney World trip.
Current Safety Protocols in Disney World
If you haven’t been to Walt Disney World recently, it may seem a bit different from the last time you stepped foot in the parks. When Walt Disney World reopened the theme parks in July 2020, Disney decided to implement some major updates with the counsel from health authorities, government agencies, and the CDC.
Some of these protocols include enhanced cleaning, reduced contact with cashless transactions, social distancing markers, and physical barriers on queues, attractions, and more.
Here are a few changes and restrictions Walt Disney World has made:
- Face coverings are required for Cast Members and Guests (ages 2 and up)
- Temperature screening in some locations (Those with temperatures 100.4 F° or above will not be allowed entry)
- Disney Park Pass system
- Social distancing markers
- Increased hand sanitizing locations
- and more!
Possible 2022 Safety Protocols in Disney World
But when thinking ahead to the future, Disney CEO Bob Chapek gave us a glimmer of hope for 2022, even indicating that face masks and social distancing may not be implemented then! He said:
“I will tell you what our expectations are in terms of the state of the world by then. We have no doubt, and when we reopen up in parks that were closed, or increase the capacity, that we’ll have some level of social distancing and mask-wearing for the remainder of this year.
That’s our expectation. But, I believe that Dr. Fauci said earlier today that he hopes that there is vaccines for everyone who wants them by April this year. If that happens, that is a game-changer
And that could accelerate our expectations, and give people the confidence that they need to come back to the parks. Will there be overlap until we know that we have herd immunity? Sure there will. But do we believe we’ll be in the same state of 6 foot social distance and mask wearing in ’22? Absolutely not.”
As more people are being vaccinated, and COVID-19 cases are declining, we can only hope that fewer travel restrictions will be in place for 2022. The thought of social distancing markers and face masks will hopefully be a thing of the past as the year progresses, which gives many Guests that visit Walt Disney World a chance to plan a “normal” trip at the parks in 2022.
50th Anniversary at Disney World
Furthermore, Disney announced that the Walt Disney World 50th anniversary celebration, beginning October 1 of this year, will be going on for 18 months! That will give Guests who are planning 2022 and early 2023 vacations to the parks the same opportunity to celebrate this event as if they were to visit at the end of 2021.
And another added bonus — Possibly even more attractions opening by 2022! We know that Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure is opening on October 1, 2021 and the reimagining of Jungle Cruise will debut later in 2021, but what about other projects in the works?
Both TRON Lightcycle / Run and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind are two attractions that have been in construction for a little while now and could open up within the next year (though no opening date for either attraction have been confirmed by Disney). Therefore, if Guests wait until 2022 they will also have the possibility of experiencing even more rather than if they visited in 2021.
Ticketed Events at Disney World
When thinking into the future of 2022, Guests could once again see ticketed events such as Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party return to Disney World. Disney hasn’t yet confirmed when these special seasonal events are coming back, but we’re holding out hope that we may see these return by fall of next year.
Additionally, it has already been confirmed that the EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival will return later this year, which dropped the “Taste of” title, something Disney debuted during the ongoing pandemic. Because of this, many are thinking Disney may be working towards “normalcy” once again.
Visiting Disney World In 2022 May Be Your Best Bet
We can only hope and dream for the time being that 2022 will feel like life is back to normal once again, and maybe even a good time to plan a Disney World vacation. I’m sure I’m not the only one who cannot wait to see Walt Disney World Parks filled with smiling faces once again.
