For California theme park goers, the pandemic has been tough. Unlike other regions, California has not been able to reopen major theme parks, such as Disneyland Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood. That being said, during the pandemic Disneyland has found ways to operate during the pandemic, and continues to evolve.

Disneyland originally set a reopening date of July 17 — the theme park’s 65th anniversary. Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, Josh D’Amaro announced that the parks were ready to open, with all safety measures in place months ago and, although Disneyland has not been able to reopen Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park due to Governor Newsom’s theme park reopening guidelines, Disneyland has found a way to still showcase those new safety measures, and allow Guests to once again return to Disney California Adventure.

As you may know, DCA will be continuing its phased reopening very soon! The Buena Vista Street portion of the theme park partially reopened during the holidays, officially operating as an extension of the Downtown Disney District. Downtown Disney began its reopening process last summer.

As of March 18, 2021, however, Disneyland Resort Guests will be able to visit Disney California Adventure Park for a special, limited-time ticketed event called A Touch of Disney. This food festival is a great first-step for Disney to start to get Guests back into a Disneyland Resort park, even though attractions and rides will not be operational.

Universal Studios Hollywood also has a food and drink section, much like Disneyland’s Downtown Disney, called Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles. Guests have been able to explore that area while Universal remains closed, but now, it seems Universal may be taking a second glance at what Disneyland is doing with their new event.

After the event details were announced by Disney, Universal Studios Hollywood took to Twitter and posted an ominous emoji, almost as if they were reacting to the news. As we can see below Universal (@UniStudios) posted the eye emojis, which had Guests instantly thinking that Universal may also reopen as Disneyland is with a food and drink event around the park.

Christian (@Tarihc78) replied by replacing “A Touch of Disney”, with “A Touch of Universal”.

Universal Studios Hollywood replied to various amounts of Tweets with a zipped lips emoji, which heavily teases that an announcement is clearly coming.

At the moment, Universal has not yet officially announced an event that would allow Guests to venture into the park instead of just enjoying CityWalk. That being said, at Universal Orlando Resort, Universal Studios currently has Mardi Gras underway, which, due to COVID-19 has changed — decorations and food booths are scattered throughout the park, and it is seemingly doing very well! After proving that Universal can also have festival-type events, it would not be surprising to see something similar in Hollywood. Again, this is purely speculation at this point.

in the past, Universal Studios Hollywood has indicated that they have not been opposed to reopening shopping and dining in the theme park, though they have not made any announcements since.

Considering Universal broke even this year financially, it would likely be profitable for them to open the parks with a similar event to Disneyland, which would have more money flowing back to Universal, and would also be a great way to bring back Team Members that the company previously had to let go! If there are any further developments on this possibility, Inside the Magic will keep you updated!
