Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has proved to be one of the most iconic and recognized films ever, so it shouldn’t be surprising that multiple versions of the beloved animated classic exist.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) stands as a timeless classic in the realm of animated cinema, marking a groundbreaking moment in film history. What makes this Disney masterpiece so iconic lies not only in its captivating storyline but also in its pioneering techniques. As the first full-length cel-animated feature in motion picture history, it broke new ground in animation, setting the standard for the genre for decades to come. Walt Disney’s ambitious vision to adapt the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale into a feature-length animated film was met with skepticism. Yet, it ultimately proved to be a stroke of genius.

However, there are more versions of Snow White out there than just the Disney classic. Just recently, another remake of the fairytale was announced, this time giving the princess a samurai background.

The movie, titled Snow White and the Seven Samurai, was released on digital outlets this past week. The film can be bought on Apple TV for $9.99 or rented for $4.99. The plot of the movie can be read below:

“Left for dead by her rich and powerful stepmother, Snow White is taken in by a team of assassins – The Seven Samurai, who train her in their ways of fighting. As her stepmother becomes more and more powerful, Snow White and the samurai take up arms to topple her once and for all.”

Directed by Michael Su, the movie stars Geena Alexandra, Fiona Dorn, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Eric Roberts, Gina Vitori, and others.

Will Disney cancel its live-action Snow White film?

Of course, this film is the second project to come forward using the “Snow White” name since the backlash began with Disney and its live-action version, which stars Rachel Zegler (Snow White), Gal Gadot (Evil Queen), and Andrew Burnap (Jonathan).

The first one, which is a retelling of the original Grimm fairytale, is being produced by The Daily Wire and will star Brett Cooper as the titular princess. The film is being made in direct retaliation over the reported changes that Disney made to its animated classic.

As backlash came forward against Disney for the changes that it was making to the film, especially after comments from Rachel Zegler, the company ultimately made the decision to put the movie on the back burner and delay its release until March 21, 2025. This is a full-year delay.

Though Zegler was quoted saying things like “this is not a love story,” and that the fairytale was “strange” to her last year, the actress has since changed her tone when talking about the film. Rachel Zegler recently called the Disney Princess “iconic” and said that the cartoon is something that “people really care about.

“I don’t want to mess this up for anybody, including myself,” Zegler said in previous comments. “The writers and Marc Webb and our entire producing team…it’s a bit different story-wise. We were able to do ‘Whistle While You Work,’ which made me really happy and excited. I was really nervous more about the technical element. That first-look image went out… and there’s a lot of CGI in the film.”

Though some fans have called on Disney to cancel the film altogether, the company is still moving forward with the spring 2025 release.

When the film is released, Disney will reportedly need to make more than $300 million at the box office to break even.
